Hi All.
I am wondering how hot brake discs should get.
After about 10 or so miles of driving mine get quite hot.
I could drive the car 10 or so miles to the car wash and while in the process of washing, water from the jet would hit the discs and cause a hissing noise and a bit of steam.
Never really noticed this before.
Brakes have been checked on all 4 wheels and all is fine and as it should be.
Just want to get some feedback please.
Thanks.

Totally normal - on my two cars anyway.
Even after a short drive then a wash they always hiss and steam.

When you say they've been checked, have you jacked up each corner and spun the wheel? This would be a quick and easy test to see if the brakes are binding. If the brakes are not binding, then I guess it's normal.

Hi Herby.
Yep, have had all the wheels of the ground and spun. There was a bit of a rubbing noise
when the mechanic spun the wheel, he reckons that was normal so I took it to a second mechanic just to be sure
who took it for a drive and then put her up on a ramp and spun the wheels and had
a wee look around. He couldn't find any problems.
So that was 2 mechanics checked her out.
the relevant work carried out in the last while has been front discs and pads, offside rear calliper and nearside
rear calliper slide lubricated.
The car is for MOT in a fortnite so hopefully when she is getting checked out, any problems will be
picked up on.

Discs always get hot when braking but its good to make sure the car rolls freely on a push or slight gradient otherwise a caliper could be sticking .My sons Touran recently passed an MOT but last week he asked me about rubbing noise from the back. Both calipers were seized and had to be replaced and pads down to the metal and he cmmutes 50 mls daily!!He said he had noticed the handbrake was poor but thought the MOT or his servicer would have noticed this first .Hope that he will be more alert in the future
