View Full Version : Which VAG-COM to get please?

Are the VAG-COM cables and software bundles any good that are offered on eBay? After giving my Mk4 Golf a good clean out (in another thread I asked about emissions) I have got rid of a lot of sludge and muck from the engine breather and cam cover. However, the engine, while pulling a lot smoother, now hunts badly at tick over and frequently cuts out.

I suspect the throttle body may need to be reset?

I did use all new gaskets on the inlet manifold and made sure they were in place before tightening them down. Should they have been put in with silicon sealant too? I did not do this I just put them in as they came, dry.

So, with the above in mind I am willing to get a VAG-COM cable and software but I cannot afford to go to a dealer (would they even sell it?) as I am disabled and on a low fixed income.

Your anticipated help is most welcome :)

Hi, I bought this one from Amazon to diagnose my Audi engine codes. Very easy to use and was accurate at diagnosing my engine issues.

That code reader wont be able to perform a throttle body alignment.

Buy a cable from Genden (see here (http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGUSB.html)) or similar retailer and a copy of VCDS-Lite (see here (http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/index.html))

For what VCDS-Lite can and can't do - see here (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html)

With apologies for appearing to be a bit dense here :) Am I correct in assuming that what I need is the VCDS-Lite software and that this will be able to perform the throttle body (motor) alignment? I have gone through what it can and can't do but I am left bewildered. It does not specifically mention my need.

Thank you for the advice so far :)

You are correct yes, however the VCDS-Lite software will need to be registered in order for it to perform a throttle body alignment (if that is what needs to be performed of course).
