suspension upgrade 2000 1.8 non turbo avant, whats best?

hi i have recently brought a 2000 a4 avant 1.8 non turbo and was wondering as its a bit soft and i would like to lower it slightly, what would be the best shocks and springs i could fit without spending a huge amount? also what else could i do to improve performance without spending a fortune?
