View Full Version : RNS-E Retrofit done! (ish)

I've just spend the afternoon retro-fitting my RNS-E unit. The conversion was done from a single-din unit so it took a while to complete. I still have to code the unit with VCDS but I have one major problem, the RNS-E unit doesn't slot back very far! It is currently sticking out about an inch :-( It appears that the fascia surrounding the unit is very slightly too wide. Is this something that people have noticed? The fascia is quite rounded but I see all the ones on eBay are more angular.

Anyway, here are some notes from the install.

1) Nothing should require a lot of force, make sure you have got all bolts out - I missed 2 initially!

2) To trim down the climate control panel, it needs 5mm off each side at the top and 6-7mm off each side at the bottom.

3) But the double din cage from Audi direct, they are less than 50 quid brand new!

If anyone wants to point me to how I code the unit using VCDS I would be very grateful :-)

This will help.

Good job - hope you're pleased with it.

You need to enable Navigation in Can Gateway.

Heres the coding for the RNSE Audi Radio/Navigation System (RNS-E) - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_Radio/Navigation_System_%28RNS-E%29)

From your description you have bought an A3 rounded top unit and the A4 needs the more right angles top unit to fit in right - if I find a picture you will see what I mean. (I think this is what you mean but I could be wrong ;))

Thanks for the info guys. But I am still at a loss knowing what to do! All I know how to do in VCDS is look up fault codes and clear them. What do I have to do within VCDS?

Yes, my unit looks like the one in this (http://www.audiworld.com/tech/pics/elec151_DSCN0643.jpeg) pic, but it looks like I need one like this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-Navigation-system-RNS-E-for-Audi-A4-S4-A4-Cab-/280923225957). I guess I could cut mine down however I might just sell it on and get a Mk II unit :-D

Yep you've bought an A3 unit.

Its quite easy - just go into CAN Gateway in the Modules page and tick the box relating to Navigation.

Now go into the navigation module and use the coding on the RNSE page to the options in relation to your car.

Thats just typical. I just checked the auction and it was listed as an A4 unit, it shows a photo of an A4 unit yet I got an A3 one :-(

Anyway, I had a go at the coding in VCDS and I cannot do the first part. If I try to go the Can Gateway module it just times out and says cannot communicate with controller (or something similar). However I managed the second part and now I see my radio stations/etc on the DIS and the unit turns on/off with ignition so that helps.

I now have another problem. I got a 2012 Navigation disc which updated the unit when I put it in but now it says it cannot read the disc. When I put my 2005 disc in, it says it's too old. Is there a way I can downgrade the unit back to the 2005 software?

Thanks
Allan

I managed to downgrade the unit back to it's 2005 software. I'm hoping that the seller will accept the unit back since it was clearly not the correct unit.

I tested out the navigation today and I don't get the DIS display for navigation so I take it I need to figure out why I cannot communicate with the CAN Gateway controller :-( I tried with ignition off and ignition on, but not engine. Any other ideas?

Are there any errors showing on the CAN gateway?

A long shot but try plugging the radio back in then changing the coding to RNSE and see if that helps.

If it was advertised as an A4 unit and as he sent you an A3 unit he should take it back - if you bought it through eBay open a not as described case if the seller won't accept a return.

Unfortunately I can't get into the CAN Gateway at all so can't see if there are any errors. I didn't have time to try a full scan of all modules but I'm not sure if this would help anyway? I tried putting the old Concert radio back in and still no joy. I guess I am not going to get to see my navigation on the full colour DIS - oh well, I am happy with the rest of the functionality so far.

As for the unit, yes it was bought on eBay and the seller isn't responding so I will file a dispute with eBay. I am sourcing a Mk II unit instead :-)

Odd one - maybe a pm to Jon (a8 tech) would prove useful.

Good job - you're far better off with a MK2 (IMO) make sure it has a MEDIA button beside the radio button and the part number will end in 193.

eBay will favour on your side, they always do.

You can get a glossy surround or matte but both are still MK2 as long as they have the MEDIA and ends in 193.

I think I posted some links on a previous thread of yours (I think!)

Thanks I will give a8_tech a PM :-)

I have noticed a few units which have a Media button but the part number ends in 192. Do you know if this is a Mk II unit or Mk I?

I think you're looking at an Exeo unit but thats basically a B7 so same dash. I think these are an exception to the 193 but I will double check and let you know.

I shall try and get a scan done tonight and post it here. I am just trying to get everything working after retro-fitting an RNS-E to my A4. Chris said I would need to go to the CAN gateway and tick Navigation on the controller. Perhaps I can do this on 17-Dash instead?

I managed to connect VCDS last night and under 17-Instruments was something along the lines of 'CAN-Infotainment' which I set to include Navigation and now I have the information on the DIS. Thank you very much :-)
