Hello all
Thinking of buying an A4 cab (though my choice seems ever to change - I almost bought a 3.2 159 the other day - had a moment of clarity when I saw what it would cost to service)
I was reading this review on UCE - UsedCarExpert.co.uk (http://www.usedcarexpert.co.uk/cars/audi/a4/advice/a4-is-a-real-four-seat-cabrio/7920/) - just idly wandering the net. Realised perhaps an A4 cab would be ideal.
Anybody got one of these? - and I was wondering which models have the CVT box - I just really can't get on with the CVT thing. I understand the engineering sense - they just feel so alien.
My guess is the 1.8 petrol would be the best - they also say that the diesel cars can be two grand more than the petrols! Is that still true?
If anybody does have an A4 cab - what should I look for? Model and potential faults wise.
Many thanks
Carl

Seem any good?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thread moved to Cabrio section and renamed to something more catchy than "A4 Cab".
Hopefully this helps :)

If it is 2 wheel drive and automatic, it is cvt, otherwise known as multitronic, if quattro 4 wheel drive and automatic it is called tiptronic.
You don't want a cvt/multitronic unless it's post 2005 when the major documented faults were eradicated by the introduction of more clutch packs in the box.
The A4 cabriolet is a heavy car and with the 4 cylinder engine it is sadly underpowered, so to get any kind of performance you would be working it hard and using a lot of fuel.
I tried a couple of 1.8 turbo cars and was unimpressed.I tried two 2.4 v6 petrol cars and though they are no racing car it was noticeably better when pulling through the gears and far smoother, so I bought the v6 2.4 with 5 speed manual.
The 3.0 v6 performs even better, but having owned the saloon version previously I would point out that though a lovely car and good performer they have a ridiculous thirst for petrol.
The 2.5 v6 diesel mated to the 6 speed manual would presumably give the smoothness of a v6 and maybe the economy of an average 4 cylinder petrol.
When inspecting or viewing an A4 cabriolet use your common sense and study all the things you might when looking at any car, making sure it has had correct servicing and up to date cam belt changes ( at approx 70,000 miles give or take depending on engine) and also bear in mind there is a life to the cam belt, usually quoted at 5 years what ever the miles covered.
Look for obvious signs of leaking roof or seals around windows and any water ingress through the bulkhead below the battery area.
Blocked drain bungs under the windscreen (1 below battery and 1 below servo on r/h/s) can encourage water ingress and the battery side being blocked can allow water into the car via the firewall and towards your main ECU and any comfort module and electronics therein.
On the whole a very well put together car and quite trouble free when looked after correctly.
Do a search , either within the forum , or on any web search in relation to the Audi cvt/multitronic disaster issues and be informed before you look at a prospective new vehicle.
I would go as far as saying that if you are looking at pre 2005 cars the 1.8t cvt/multi is going to be the one to stay clear of, the 2.4 v6 petrol and 2.5 v6 diesel with manual 5 or 6 speed boxes are going to be favourite all round pleasers. Many of the cabbies have low miles due to being second cars so no need to settle for a high miler.
I you are looking at post 2004/2005 you might find the later multi box with 2.0 tdi 140 is a very nice bet.
Just my opinion based on owning a 2002 2.4 v6 petrol currently and doing a lot of research prior to buying.
Good luck if it isn't a bit late for the sun shine
