View Full Version : Interior 'Chrome' Removal

Being a bit OCD, but my glove box area "Quattro" chrome strip and the piece that runs along the drivers door of similar material both have a couple of marks.

I have bought new ones from Audi and pick them up tomorrow, they have offered to swop them over and will charge an hours labour.

Is this a simple swop?...if it is I will do it myself, are they just stuck on does anyone know?

I'm pretty sure they're clipped in somehow, when I upgraded mine they fitted them for free, albeit I was getting other work done at the time..........If they'd asked for an hours labour I certainly wouldn't have been paying it.

Hopefully someone with more detail can chime in to help you mate.

Good luck

The main door ones are just clipped on, easy to remove with a small screw driver. - unsure about the glovebox one. You might have to waiti until the new part arrives and look at it.

Just take your time as the door area marks easy if you slip with the screw driver - no dought you can buy a special tool to remove these from audi for more ££££££

They just pop out with a screwdriver - as others have said be careful not to scratch your dash or break any clips.

see below for door trim removal

quattro trim removal

put your screwdriver about every 1/3'rd of the way accross the trim and it pops out - see below

You will have to pull the RHS side of the trim slightly with your hand to get it to pull out - use a little force

door trim removal

Place your fingers at the bottom of the lhs side of the trim (im demostrating this on the passenger side) and pull out the first 2 clips

you will now need your screwdriver to prise out the rhs side of the trim as there is no gap for your fingers - the rest of the trim will pop out - see below for clip locations

Hi,Just interested in the cost of the trim panels? I need a drivers door one and possibly a front passenger door trim too.
Thanks

Bump ;)

I never thought about it til this thread appeared. My driver's side panel is covered in marks from the previous owner & would like to know the cost of new parts.

This next part may require a new thread, but the black plastic disc on the MMI control wheel has a few marks too, anyone know if you can replace this part? It's really annoying me when I feel the bumps on the wheel.

Cheers guys.

I will go dismantle my car and find the part number and search ;)

The control knob (ooo errr)/turn wheel Paul?

Mmi control knob has no part number but will look at prices for both

Chrome door strip as below

Yeah that's the one :D It started as one tiny little nick & seems to have developed into a group of bubbles, like the plastic has blown. When I charge my phone I'll try & get a picture downloaded from dropbox.

Brycie

Thanks Chris. I'll be able to use that part number for the door strip. I believe it's only the drivers side that needs replacing anyway.

Sounds like I'll have to live with the pimply control knob then :biglaugh:. The one other part I want to replace is the passenger door window contol button as it' peeled to reveal the white underneath. I thiink that may be a pig of a job though. I was gonna take it to aaudi & get a qote for replacing all three of the parts I mentioned, this thread made me think to ask the question on here though.

4F0 867 410 a 1MJ was my drivers side number. It popped out easily following the instructions from Chris, the dashboard strip took a bit more getting out!

The strip in front of the passenger with "Quattro" written on it was 4F2 853 189 J 1MJ.

The price for the two parts total from Audi was £85.66 (sorry cant remember the split)

And oh yes! to the MMI button peeling!....was thinking of buying a carbon fibre circle skin to stick over it after sanding it down smooth though a new one would be ideal.

Brycie
19-07-2012, 08:41 PM
Thank you as400, that answers my question, must be somewhere close to a 50/50 split I'd imagine.

The MMI thing is a real pain, I'd love to get it fixed. The link shows the bubbling that's occurred:

https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Public/mmicontroldial.txt?w=02c36782

Edit: Try that, the file was protected so I've changed it to public. Michele's on the laptop tonight, so I'm working from my phone. So many possible jokes abut pimply control knob, didn't think I'd get any views with a thread by that name though.:biglaugh:

Paul your image is protected!

Switch to Photobucket :D

By the way - the knob (:naughty:) is about a tenner from Audi after a quick search online ;)

Is your knob (oops) like this?

Brycie
19-07-2012, 09:43 PM
Just a tenner? That's a bargain, I thought it'd be really expensive - result!

P.s. as you can see my MMI panel is different to yours, yours is a lot more stylish, is that because yours is a Le Mans do you think?

Just the window control button to sort now but I'm well happy with 40 odd quid for the chrome door strip & 10 for the control knob.

I had a look on eBay and there are no C6's being broke but if one appears I'll let you know - will only cost you a couple of pound at the most buying from a scrap car.

It just pulls off, get a good grip and pull.

Same going on - just push down until it presses as normal then you're good to go :)

The photo looks very much like the MMI panel from an A4 B8 or an A5. It's not an A6 panel - neither C6 or C7 look like that.

Chris, do I get the "Anorak of the Day" award?

Boo! Hiss!

It's an A5 turnwheel :) The first thing that appeared when I googled mmi knob replacement ... Although some images which hurt my eyes also appeared :(

Just asking if the bubbling was similar to that as I've never seen or heard one with that problem - missed your edit Paul but nope, it's an A5 one ;)

Yes Mark, stop nitpicking with your MMI fuelled brain ;)

:biglaugh: didn't dare search 'vag mmi knob replacement' on my work's computer. That would have been an awkward conversation with my IT Dept :D

Was very confused for a mo there, as I thought that was your mmi panel Chris and then thought MF was saying mine wasn't an A6 panel. Up to speed now though. Don't know how this has happened as it's only since I've had the car & I don't get anything sharp near it. Sounds like as400 has the same thing though.

Anorak points indeed for identifying it as an A5 panel though MF. This anorak in training salutes you :D

Some things that have appeared when searching have scarred me for life, most of which I can't repeat :biglaugh:

Ring those breakers tomorrow and see what they can do - may aswell get a cheaper second hand unit than paying Audi for something that does the same job and cheaper at the same time.

I definitely will. I did once do a search for A6 for spares but no results came up that were relevant, so I thought they were rare. Will have to remember to search again if more parts need replacing. Hopefully I'll be able to get the mmi wheel, window button & silver door panel in one hit without paying dealer's new parts prices like you say. Good find Chris, thanks.

No problem :)

If you're looking for breaking a6's again, search in the main eBay page and not the motors as I think they're categorised differently from the normal cars.

Let us know how you get on :)

Good luck Brycie, hope you get it sorted mate.

As for pricing, generally, I always at least "try" the dealers.........sometimes they can really surprise you, and not always in a bad way.

Anyone remember my thread about the foglight housings for my A6?
I asked the question about what people's perceptions were as tothe price from Audi, and got various replies back some stating that they thought about £70 each, some around £100 for the pair etc etc.

In the end I got them both for around £9.00

If memory serves my insert above the glovebox wasn't earth shatteringly expensive either!

Look forward to seeing how you get on.

Brycie
20-07-2012, 02:04 AM
Cheers Jim, I remember Chris saying something similar on a recent post about dealer prices for parts, so I'll give them a call, although I don't have the part number for the mmi dial. Worth asking though. As400 has already posted the price of the silver door trim which isn't bad but I reckon the breaket will be cheaper for that - depends on the condition of the one for breaking I suppose. Will post my findings tomorrow though.

Oh no, this is definitely a slippery slope - I've just thought about the panel under the rear bumper (that the tailpipes stck out of) & wonder if the panel from the S Line car for breaking would fit mine. I'm sure I saw a post recently saying it would. I wonder how much the missus will let me get away with :D

Chriseybaby

Someone asked for prices on the door trim.

The passenger door one is about £55 and the one above the glovebox is £30 (Non quattro version)

I need these too, but breakers don't seem to like selling them, they want to sell the complete door card.

If I remember correctly your car has a black plastic insert between the two exhaust pipes like my A3?

I (think) the S-Line prefacelift bumper is an all-in-one job but I will check this out as you can change the insert in the A3 (facelift) for the S-Line diffuser.

I'm sure on the facelift cars this can be changed and after visualising the two cars the S-Line prefacelift is an all-in-one as I said above so it's the whole bumper you need.

But I will check and report back.

Just had a quote of £24 for a new sparkly one from Audi Camberley. I'd rather pay a bit more and get a new one than risk buying an unseen one from a breaker.

The salesman who sold me the vehicle said their smart repair guy they used to make the cars look good had seen this a lot and the reason?...aftershave.

Yep it's corrosive properties first thing in the morning, well that's his theory. Anyway I shall be grabbing a new hard shiny knob next Tuesday (stop tittering at the back!) pics will follow.

Well it looks like it'll be a dealer job, the breaker said he would only sell the mmi unit as a whole unit for £350. And he wouldn't sell the strips seperately either. He says the diffuser is in about 6-8 parts which fit together but wouldn't fit an SE. Bumper as a complete unit though would be £110.

I think I'll leave the bumper & just get the mmii bit for now from Audi. Not sure about the sparkly look though, but I suppose it may be an easier sell to the wife if it is sparkly.

There is a super shiny chrome wrap. I was thinking it could be good for anyone with the misty chrome exterior parts near the windows.

I would consider some interior 'carbon' wrap, wouldn't want to get carried away with it though!

mlgt
24-07-2012, 02:13 PM
I would say you wont get carried away, taking apart the centre console takes some work and I gave up in the end.
I contacted 3M and they sent me a sample pack with the different types of vinyl they have on offer.

In the end I went on ebay and ordered a roll. I have though about the chrome parts, but think I will see if I can remove them, sand them down and respray in gun metal and apply lacquer to avoid it from fading.

However the wrapping does add a nice touch to the car, but in my defence I did it because the panels were scratched beyond repair :)

Well I just picked up my new controller from Audi £20.65+VAT = £24.78 pulled the old one off and new one on brilliant I thought.

Looked at the old one with its large 'blister' as per similar to an earlier photo and thought what the heck lets burst it. Well underneath the thin rubber layer was black smooth plastic. Gradually bit by bit like a snake shedding its skin I peeled away the blister and ended up with this!

17443

Its near perfect! obviously if I had taken the plunge and burst the blister and scratched it all off before I would have saved myself £24!....so if anyone finds the controller starting to shed its skin you know what to do. I ended up using warm water and a scouring pad to get it like the photo.

Brycie

Oh right, that's an option then, who'd have thunk it! Does it have the same feel as the original layer? Will I be brave enough though to give it a go even though I can see the evidence for myself? Kind of seems counter-intuitive.

Is the new one much different?

Well you can feel a 'slight' difference, difficult to describe it really, the old one is very slightly smoother but thats about it really, as I said if I had done this before no way would I have splashed out. Here is another pick side by side.

Welcome to VWAF

You will have more luck in the 8P A3 Section - Audi A3 - 8P - 2004 - 2012 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?222-Audi-A3-8P-2004-2012)
