I have found a car after a long time looking
Audi A4 2.0tdi 170 s line, 2009 registered on 58 plate, 43,000 miles, DVD sat nav, B & O sound system, lava grey
Priced at £16,400
Is it possible to upgrade this unit to a hdd nav unit?
Does the price seem reasonable or over priced for this car?

Easier and cheaper in the long run of buying a car with it already fitted.

On a 58 plate it could well be an early model with MMI 2G, in which case upgrading to 3G with HDD would be even more costly. As Chris says, look for a car with the system already fitted.

HDD nav has a higher res screen and the ability to show 3d images of landmarks and most buildings.
Some examples are the London eye, big Ben, houses of parliament and most surrounding buildings in major towns and cities - you can also play DVD videos.
None of those features are available on the DVD nav.

Thanks Chris, much appreciated.
guess I best add HDD nav to my 'must have' list then! ;)

Yep it's a far superior system over the DVD nav.

How often do people update the maps on sat navs, dvd sat nav is easy to buy the latest disc but i read on the internet that the only way to update hdd nav is by an audi dealership which cost a couple of hundred pounds, is this correct? or can updates be had from the internet and updated by myself

With the new 3G systems (both DVD and HDD) the maps need an activation code and a online connection to Audi Germany which only the dealer can do, so no more buying maps off eBay unless it's a brand new disc which has never been used as the code is a one shot use but you still need the dealer to install them, usually for an hours labour charge.
With the HDD the updates are only available from the dealer.
With mmi 2g you can still buy the disc online and put it straight in to your drive as no activation is needed.

It's an excellent system, well worth the extra cost over the DVD based system

Whilst we're on an education thing...... what's difference between 2g and 3G?!
Sorry for all the questions, I'm currently a BMW owner looking to move to the other side so I'm not used to all the terminology :o

Have a look on here -
2G was the first MMI released in 2003/4 and was in production up until 2008/9 - its the Audi equivalant of iDrive - incorporates the radio and nav, on board computer etc.
3G replaced this with a newer high res screen, ability to use sd cards for music, hard disk nav which shows 3d images of landmarks and buildings, be able to play dvd videos etc.

Chris - thanks again :fing02:
so if I understand this right: DVD is 2g and HDD is 3G and 3G is worth every penny more than DVD!
One more question..... anyone got a 2010+ A5 3.0 tdi S Line for sale?! Or debating A4 Avant, 170, fully loaded (S Line)

2G Cd or DVD
3G DVD or HDD - you will know if HDD is fitted by the extra joystick in the central control knob.

With HDD 3G you can also watch DVDs, have the choice of three routes, combine it with Drive Select and you get Individual Setting, combine with B&O and get optical amps etc, full voice control, and the list goes on.
However it's not all good. Mine still gets some instructions wrong on roundabouts!

That sounds amazing, how did you discover all this?
Buying a second hand car, I'm unlikely to get a tuition of all the gadgets :(
