Just bought a new 2012 A4 Avant 177 Black Edition 6 Speed Manual and wondering if anyone else can tell me what MPG they are seeing? I am curious whether it improves as the engine runs in, currently under 1k on the clock. I am seeing around 40 MPG combined which is fairly poor compared with dealer stats. Hoping to get over 50 mpg, anybody else getting near that?
I have the same on order (saloon). I used to get 50+ from my previous 170 which was better than the 143 I had first time around. All reports suggest the 177 should be more economical, revised flywheel, electro steering etc. My car is currently being built so cannot comment yet - will keep an eye on this post though!
How about the drive, is it as smooth as reported, are you able to compare with the previous engine?

Hi Niko, apologies for the delayed response. Everyone (Dealer, a few other Audi owners) is saying you should be seeing 50+ after the engine gets some use on it. No one has quantified exactly what 'some use' means. I'll keep this thread updated as the engine gets a few more miles on it.

Under the first 2k miles or so the car runs rich anyway. From what I've been told the engine management system etc is still learning your driving style and adjusting fuel injections...and of course the engine is still naturally tight anyway at this point. It'l get a lot better once you get some miles on it. I get easily 400+ miles from a tank on a 3.0TDi (around 42mpg) so 50mpg+ should be easily attainable for you.

Hi there, my 2.0 TDI S line (black edition) Avant 177 currently has 1700 miles on it and combined MPG is showing 39MPG. Hoping that this will climb as I get some miles on her. In terms of smootheness compared to my previous 170 (sold after 6 mths and 7,000 miles), I see very little difference, despite the motoring press reporting that the 177 is a much more refined unit. I was quite disapointed after reading the reviews, but I notice no noticable difference in smootheness in comparison to the 170.
My 170 was only averaging 38MPG after 7000 miles, more like 32-33 when I picked it up. The 177 is averaging 39MPG pretty much from delivery so I think that there is a real world increase in efficiency.

Just a tip on quoting MPG figures from the DIS. DON'T. It's a complete waste of time, due to it completely and utterly over-exaggerating the actual. My A3 does it by circa 15% consistently.
You say you're getting 42mpg, yet you're going 400ish miles to a tank? Now, I might have the stats for the fuel tank wrong (64litres in the A4?). But lets be generous here, and assume you actually get 450 to a tank. That works out as 32mpg. Which is pretty ****. Lets even be more generous and assume you get 450 miles to a 55 litre tank. Yup that's it, still only 37 mpg!
As a comparison. I've got a DSG A3 with the 140 2.0tdi. My computer tells me I achieve over 55mpg rain or shine, day in day out. Quite often motorway runs get me 60+, I've even had 80+mpg once (jesus though, that was a stressful game :biglaugh:)
BUT...My actual fuel consumption figures (54 litres used 500-600 miles per tank) demonstrate with cold hard facts that it's extremely rare my car ever averages over 50mpg...
Sorry for the rant, as I've just joined. But it's pet hate of mine. People claiming, nay - boasting amazing MPG figures, just by going off the cars internals readings. Especially as it can be misleading to people who are reading up about a new potentially expensive car purchase, with a heavy bias towards fuel consumption.
I'm not sure why this inaccuracy proliferates so much still. I suppose Audi certainly don't want people making too much of a fuss, as it puts the 3.0tdi even further behind the likes of the 330d. Which, from my research does in fact seem to be able to achieve a real world 40 mpg.

Sorry. I didn't make it clear how I calculated that. I didn't use the DIS, I can also confirm that the tank isn't 64 litres actually..its much closer to about 55-60, which is a cockup in the manual imho. The way I've been calculating is by filling up to the brim, running for x miles...then filling up again and using the fuel receipt litres to work out litres/to the miles driven. I can confirm I have seen 42mpg on mine on a long motorway run. E.g. when I drove to Alton towers and back recently. I wasn't trying to imply that 400miles to a tank is 42mpg.

Just changed from 59 plate to a new black edition 2.0 TDI 143.
The new one started average 40 on dis and is now up to 45. It has just over 1000 miles.
My old one did 50 - 52 on dis before I sold it.
Before I get challenged these are only rough figures. I do know that actual average for the old car was 46mpg. I haven't done the actuals for the new one yet. Need to up date the spread sheet. But definaty get less miles to a tank.
From experience it can take anything from 10 to 20k miles to fully realise the best economy from Audi engines.
Just a few thoughts from me.
