Yesterday I started to hear a knocking noise form the front. I'm pretty sure its the N/S inside CV joint as the noise remains whether I am in a straight line or turning around. It tends to go quiet under acceleration and goes louder when I coast or lift off the throttle. The noise is the same when I knock it onto neutral so it is not engine speed related. It does go faster when the car speeds up. I don't think it is the wheel bearing as it is not a low droning sound like I have heard on older cars I have had.
If it is the CV joint, is it worth just getting a new joint or just replace the whole driveshaft. Is it worth doing both sides or just the one?
I have seen driveshaft (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140465364991) on ebay. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140465364991) Does this price seem cheap to any one? They have also got this joint (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-1-8GTi-1-9TDi-2-3-2-8-INNER-CV-JOINT-BRAND-NEW-99-04-/140685161604?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20c17d3484).
