View Full Version : Question A3 Tdie or 1.6 vs A4 1.9Tdi ??
I presently run an A4 1.9TDI B6 130(6) avant.
It is getting a little long in the tooth at 190kmiles and
I have been wondering about replacing with an A3 Tdie or Tdi 1.6.
I presently average about 52 mpg and hope to get another 10mpg from either
of those alternatives. What I should like to hear from those who have run both
A4 and A3 is whether I would be disappointed with such matters as the road noise and
stability of the ride etc. Is there a significant difference in those aspects between
SE and Sport models?
I anticipate that I would look for an SE spec or S line.
Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks.

Whats your daily/weekly mileage?
Will reply back soon with more info on my 'E' ;)
Good question.
Daily, only about 55mles. I also drive a round trip of 850 miles once a month.
Annual mileage tends to be about 30-35k.
I seldom drive in seriously built up areas.
Iwouldn't wish to be without criuse for the motorway and would hate to be
without DIS at any time.

Well you should be OK with the DPF (which the E and 1.6 has) as these dont like built up urban areas
MPG is impressive from my E - I drive 100 miles per day all on motorway and sitting at 60-70mph I'm getting 62-75mpg all the time - the 1.6 will do 1 or 2 more
I would suggest a Sport model A3 as you get DIS, Aux in, 17" wheels, Concert HU. I would also go for the E as you're getting the reliable 1.9 TDi which is good for 300k+ if its maintained faithfully
Mine is the Sport which has the 17" wheels - road noise isn't too bad, although when you're going steady it soon disappears.
And also a good blast in 4th once a week keeps the DPF cleared.
Also depending on budget, go for a facelift model ('58 plate onwards) as you get the newer dials, drl lights, led taillights, re-designed bumper etc
I'm also getting about 700-750 miles out of a £65 fill
I do the same mileage as you per year and have done 13k since December 2011 - all trouble free apart from Audi messing up ;)
Forgot to add - the E also benefits from £30/year road tax (1.6 is £20/year) and both have the 105bhp.
Thanks Chris, that is very helpful.
Am I right to think that the Sport lacks cruise? presumably that would be an easy retro-fit?

Yep, cruise isn't standard on any trim levels but easily fitted - I shall send you a guide via PM if you wish to have it.
You will need confirmation of the cruise switch part number from Audi etc before fitting and whether you need a steering contol unit but generally all diesels have a good enough module fitted.
