This may be a stupid question but couldn't find the answer in the manual so if you could just humour me that would be great...

I got my new 2009 Passat Estate yesterday and whilst sitting in it and figuring everything out with the manual I noticed that the exhaust warning lamp lights up when you put the key in, but goes out on actually starting up. Is this normal? It doesn't reappear, either solid or flashing when it's being driven. It's only when the key is first inserted prior to ignition.

I had an old 98 Passat Saloon previously and was used to the glow-plug light doing this but not sure why this exhaust one does it?! It is probably normal but if someone could put my mind at ease it would be much appreciated.

your car has a DPF and its just checking if the warning bulb is working before clearing when you startup. is normal.

Phew! Thanks for that.
I assume then that if there is any problem with the DPF that this is the light that will come on and stay on or flash?
It's going to take some getting used to, my old R-reg was bog-standard and now I have all these buttons and lights to learn about!
Thanks again for this.

if you do a lot of town miles it might come on at some point, but most of the time the car goes into regen mode on its own and cleans the DPF itself. clever buggers these modern cars..
