I lent my car to someone today and it has come back with the drivers window down, refusing to go up.:zx11:

Now I know I am looking at paying out some money here, but in the mean time, I need to get the window up, whether it works or not I don't care, I need to make it secure.

So how on earth does the door card come off?

I have taken the screw out front and back, high up on the door, but there doesn't seem to be any obvious means of fixing.

Any ideas? and how do I fix the window? is there an abvious or common problem with the A6 doors?

Please help, I can't drive it around and leave the window down around here :1zhelp:

Cheers all

Richard

To close the window, if you have removed the screws then you need to life the panel in an upwards direction so that the hooks behind the panel come away from the door.

I am sure when I removed my drivers door panel I took the two screws out one either end and then you need a thin screwdriver and poke it in the hole under the window switches then pull the switch clear and unplug it

There may have been one more screw here can't remember but then just lift the panel up and off

It is probably your window guides that have broken only a couple of quid and just unbolt the window frame and change over only took me about half an hour

As for getting the window up with the panel off plug the window switch back in and try it, if you get movement just try and help it up but watch your fingers

If no movement at all then it could be electrical and check back along looms switches plugs fuses etc

Thanks for the replies

I couldn't work that out - and me a mensan!

Anyway, I have lifted the door card up and it just comes off with no problems. There is a cable, like a brake cable on a bike, which lifts the windows and one of the strands had broken, and scrunched up preventing the window from going up.

Simples - now I just need to get a new one and replace it.

Thanks again all

The regulator (cable thingy) failed on my Allroad. If yours is the same/similar make sure you get the rivets to fit the new one. I thought I would be able to use some I had lying around the workshop but turns out they are an "Audi special". Slightly longer than standard rivets.
The replacement I found on 'that' auction site didn't come with them either.

Hi

I got a new kit from e-bay for mine : includes cables, clips and new reel that fits to the motor all for around £22 delivered (from Germany). When fitting, wind it all onto the reel first and leave the last job as being hooking it over one of the corner rollers. Make sure that both of the springs that fit onto the winder mechanism are fully compressed. If you can find an extra pair of hands it will make life 10 times easier.

My drivers side regulator has just failed for the second time in 2 years. The window moves an inch or so closely followed by the crunching noise and then stops and wont move.

Its got to be a common fault.

I even went to the trouble of carefully greasing the one I fitted 18 months or so ago. The grease is still there but the cable has dropped off the rollers and is now probably stretched beyond repair.

I'm going to have a go at lubing the window with something that lasts. It might be coincidence but it failed during the really hot weather when everything was red hot and dry (if you missed that weather you probably blinked) added to that the expansion associated with heat and the motor and cables are under a lot of strain.

I saw something about lubing the window rubbers with a wax candle, I might even use some vaseline or something similar. Any ideas?

Halfords do a silicone spray, I use it to lube door shut seals.
