Hi guys, im new to this forum so forgive me if this question is posted in the wrong place :s
I have just bought a 1998 A4 1.9 Tdi, but when i turned up to collect it it has a 'Quattro' Emblem in wood veneer on the dash. Problem being it doesnt say it is a Quattro on the log book or any of the paperwork or anywhere else on the bodywork, and I cant find any info on a 1.9 TDi Quattro avant online. Did they make a quattro of that year and engine, if so how can I verify that mine is one?!

Easiest way to tell if you have a Quattro is to look for a differential in between the rear wheels - if not then someone's been going crazy with the super-glue & badges.

welcome to the forum. the most reliable way to identify a quattro is to look underneath. there will be a propshaft from the gearbox to the rear and a diff with shafts going to each rear wheel.
edit : too slow for quick type frank :)

What better way to pass the morning commute than lurking around the forum :-)
Good luck peering under your car if it's anything like Dundee today - far to wet for that nonsense!

Aye, driech in Aberdeen too. :zx11:
If it's not in the log book or V5 then you can probably put money on it being front-wheel drive. Not necessarily a bad thing, fuel consumption should be marginally better, and no 'crabbing' on hard lock manoeuvres. Pretty sure the 1.9 TDI quattro avant made it's appearance in 1999. After closer inspection it's definately not a Quattro! I have got a problem with the temp guage not working though. I've run it up to temp and it doesn't budge and left it to idle and it still doesn't budge - thermostat maybe? Also the top 3rd of the dash LCD display comes up in orange and says 'ok' when I start the car but then goes off and stays black the rest of the time. Any ideas?!

Probably a faulty thermostat. Known problem and a complete pain. When replacing, go for genuine Audi part. Mine does the same thing and only budges when the car is under load (towing).

Not sure if 'ok' shows completely? Could be the LCD display is faulty - again it's a known fault. There are fixes, but means removing, etc, or leave it if you can live with it. Double-check the DIS function (if it's fitted), it's controlled via a button on the underside of the indicator stalk, to reset, etc.

I was hoping it wasn't the thermostat - Bugger! That's saturday afternoon out of the window!
'OK' does ddisplay in orange clearly on start up, but then goes black and stays black. Was just worried that if the car did overheat, with the temp guage not working i woulnd know about it untill it was too late!

Don't have the DIS (LCD section of the dash) on my car but I believe there are separate warning lights for critical warnings such as temp, oil pressure, ABS/brake fluid level warnings so even if the DIS packs up you will still get a warning of problems.
These lights should come on with the ignition and extinguish after a couple of seconds.
As Spartacus says its probably your stat, if not it'll be your coolant temperature sensor (CTS) - I've had both fail. With the dodgy stat the temp would always hover around the bottom of the gauge, occasionally picking up a bit in traffic.
When the CTS started playing up it would be on 90 one minute then shoot to the bottom then pick up again after a while, it also used to idle high and unevenly until I replaced the sensor.

Press the reset button on the underside of the wiper stalk, the dash should turn on ! Chances are there are pixels missing hence why it's been turned off... Also 1.9Tdi quattro models were available until late 98, i know as i sold a few ! There were facelifted models fitted as well with the AFN 110Bhp engine but they never sold in uk !

Tried the reset button but that just turns the rest of the display off!! Never mind - ill live without it! Ive only had it two days, and bought it just to ferry my sons quad bike about but I love it!

do you mean the top part only is black?
the top part of dis displays radio information if you have an aftermarket stereo it will be blank after initial test
it will show warnings, any major problems such as oil pressure show up full screen
