Hi all!
I've just bought this car with 54,000 miles on the clock, excellent condition with no obvious faults. Just have a couple of questions if you don't mind?
1) The manual says that by continued pressure on the washer stick end, I can access HAL 9000's Menu? Mine does nothing no matter how long I press on either end of the rocker button. Is it faulty or an inaccurate manual entry?
2) Anything I should watch out for, things I should do before I get too happy with it? http://www.volkswagenforum.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.png
3) The dealer and the manual says it has "Air Con". On the control panel though, there is no On/Off button to switch on Air Con - only a circular button indicating blue for cold and red for hot. The manual also doesn't point out any physical way or instruction to turn air con on or off. Is it just a case of turning the dial right over to Blue, then switching the fans on? Or perhaps winding down the window and sticking my head out? http://www.volkswagenforum.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.png
Any thoughts, views and advice would be very welcome!
Cheers
Chris

The manual is misleading. You can only properly access the full menus if you have the higline display, which is the one with full height LED display rather than 1/2 display and 1/2 warning lights. You should be able to get things like the mpg display and its options though?
I can't be really sure about the heating, 'cos your car is older and differnt spec than I'm used to but depending on which heater configuration you have there are two options with aircon. One has an "AC" button, which is what it sounds like yours should have. The fancy 2 zone climate control just had a buttton marked "Econ" which is how you turned the aircon off. However, there were some lower spec models without aircon at all so that might be yours.
There are two ways to find out. The quickest is to open the bonnet and look for an aircon compressor. No compressor, no aircon. The other is to decode the options on your car, which can be found either in the front of your service book or on a sticker on the floor of your boot. Here's a link that you can use. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?12454-quot-How-To-quot-Check-your-Vin-Number-options-list-insurance-and-more&highlight=insurance%20check Use the Igorweb option.

If you have climatic like I do, there should be an Econ button in the cluster above the heater dials. When Econ is lit, ac is off.
Also the climatic is a sort of manual climate control system, rather than selecting your temperature on a display you just have the cold-hot dial (15-22-27) and the system will blow out the right temp air to meet that selection in the cabin.

Sorry, meant to add I also believe all 3c passats, no matter what age or trim level, all had at least manual climate control

"all had at least manual climate control"
Yes, I had a look at the parker's Guide on all models and all of them were listed as having Air Con. I've phoned the dealer this afternoon who said he was sure VW Passats all had AC. I'll be taking it in at the end of the week.
Thanks for the response.

Thanks Teflon, according to the link you kindly gave me, it doesn't mention air con in the list. But it doesn't mention having see-through glass and 4 wheels - so I'm wondering/hoping that's because it is standard equipment and therefore isn't mentioned. ;-)
I haven't a clue what I'm looking for under the bonnet for an aircon compressor, but I'll Google it and see if anyone's posted a picture of their VW Passat aircon compressor and then have a look.
Thanks so much for your help though.

What I believe is that in a normal AC car you can select a level of temperature but that the car will not regulate the temperature to keep it consistent.
In climatic models there is a sensor in the middle of the button cluster as far as I know. So when it's warm and you select 22, colder air will blow out to keep cool. On a cold morning 22 will blow out warm air to balance the cabin temp.
On climatronic the car can automatically choose how the air flows - which vents etc and all these are electronically controlled by the user if needs be. And obviously you can select different temps for each side. These models also have a sunlight sensor and grille on top of the dash.

Pantomlin is correct; the original B6 Passat had the semi-automatic 'Climatic' air-con fitted as standard in the S and SE. The Sport and SEL got the 2Zone fully automatic climate control.
The main difference as far as I know is that in the Climatic the desired temp is selected on a standard heater-style control, whereas the full climate control uses digital readouts for the temps, and each side of the car is individually controlled.
The econ button is basically the on/off switch for the aircon, and the only other button option is to recirculate the air if you're in a smoky environment, for example.
Note that if you direct the air only to the screen then the air con switches on automatically even when you're in the 'econ' mode, but it reverts back to econ if you direct the air other than to the screen.
That should all be explained in the manual though, unless an earlier owner has taken the relevant section out of the folder.;)
