New user problem - Audi A 41.9 TDI Diesel manual 1997

I have just bought my first audi from a private seller. When I turn the temperature up on the heater dark smelly smoke appears in the passenger footwell. Help! Any ideas how I can fix it please?. Also please note I am not very clever or technically minded!.

When you say dark smelly smoke, are we talking diesel smoke or burning dust/plastic smoke?

or does it smell sweet and make your windscreen mist up and get your carpets wet, accompanied by coolant loss ?
