Hi, I have a 2004 Audi A6 2.4 Avant Auto with the following fault:-
I cannot lock or unlock the doors via the key fob, (could be battery but cannot open the key) Anyway this is not the major fault which is :-
When the car is locked by way of key in the door or the drivers door switch, all the doors lock and the boot as well, but when I press the unlock button on the drivers door nothing happens, likewise when I turn the key in the drivers door, it will open the drivers door only!
It is also NOT possible to unlock the other doors from inside the car by pulling the door handles UNTIL the key has been put in the ignition and put on standby position, I hear a relay click in the doors and then you can open the doors manually by way of opening the door handle. (I think the dead-lock is engaged on the other doors until the ignition is switched on. Does anybody know of this fault or condition? and can anybody suggest a solution. Thanks in advance.

If I use the door key to unlock, it only unlocks the driver's door, and all the other doors remain deadlocked until the key's put in the ignition, the central locking button won't work until the ignition is on either, so it sounds like your physical key is working correctly, but your fob remote isn't.
Try changing the batteries, but sometimes, if the battery has been flat, then the car needs reminding that the fob is allowed to work. It says how to do this in the car handbook, but from memory, I think it's:
lock the car.
press the fob unlock button.
within 30 seconds, unlock and lock the driver's door with the key.
Now the fob should work.
You could try that first to see if yours has just forgotten the fob.
Edit - checked my old thread (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?115068-Keyfob-battery-change)about this and corrected the method slightly.

Hi Nick, thanks for the information re the locks when opened by key; that was something I was not aware of.
I have tried to open the key but it has been butchered before and without destroying the key I don't think I will be able to open it.
I did order another key from ebay but haven't been brave enough to try and swaps inards around.
One thing that bothers me re the central locking is that the unlock switch does not operate inside the car with or without ignition on,
on my A8 I had the switch would operate in either state.

Once the deadlocks are off, the central locking button on the door should lock / unlock all the doors. It's only when you first open it with the key that it won't work until you turn the key in the ignition.
Opening the key is fairly easy:
use a small screwdriver in the slot on the reverse (side without the buttons) to split the front section awayfrom the button section.
lever the button section apart by pulling apart the sides where the key blade went (2 thumbs should do this)
replace the batteries (mine uses 2 x CR1620)

If you're buying a key fob from ebay, you need to make sure you've got the correct part number and frequency, and you'll need to program the central locking to recognise it (There's a procedure for doing this somewhere on here). You'll still need to use the front section of your fob as this has the immobiliser transponder in it (and reprogramming one of those is very difficult)
Edit: here's the first thread about programming keys (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?13766-2nd-Key-Fob-Synchronisation) I could find

Hi Nick, tried the lock/unlock switch on the drivers door with the ignition switched on and even when driving; the lock button locks the car but the unlock button doesn't unlock the car, then I have to open each door manually by the door handle.
In regards to the key, please see attached picture of the butchered key. Any idea now to seperate the two?16419

The bit that's been butchered should have had a nice little slot, which you just lever up with a 4mm screwdriver. Whoever did it before has obviously not realised that and twisted the screwdriver (although it looks like they might have used a soldering iron!)
Here's a link to a video which shows exactly the way mine comes apart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keYT5bXoyNk

If the lock button works but not unlock, then the key is communicating, but either the unlock button is not working (might not be contacting on the electronic bit underneath) or the electronics are not working.

Hi Nick, re the key; I have managed to get the top casing of the remote part of the key with great difficulty, but the lower half containing the circuit board is stuck fast.
It has been glued with a 2 part epoxy so doubt it will ever come apart. I have oredered a replacement key housing, as soon as I get this I will very carefully prise open the key blade
part once removing the screw of course and then remove the transponder and circuit board to the new housing. I have since tried my key in tha car and it still starts so I know the transponder is preently working. Many thanks for your tips. In regards to the internal switch, I doubt that this will be open circuit, more likely the central locking board is defunct, when I get the new housing will try and sync the key to the car and re-evaluate the situation. Thanks agin for your support.

It is the internal lock button NOT the lock button on the key. The key does nothing apart from manually open the car with the key blade and start the car.

Posted edited to add full details:
When I drive away the car locks itself as it is set up to do. When i stop and remove the key all the doors open as they should. BUT the little red led by the drivers lock button is not on, none of the key programming options work at all and generally the door open button by the drivers inside door handle works only intermittently though the lock part of the rocker switch works fine.
I can open doors and tailgate with the key but of course the alarm sounds if I open the tailgate without a key in the ignition and the dorrs apparently lock then too.
It's weird and disconnecting the battery doesn't work as I've tried that and now have to reset the date and time!
Any help gratefully received or its book into the Audi shop in a couple of weeks I guess.... :-(

i took the the car to the main dealer who reprogrammed keys and reset parameters if I remember correctly. I no longer have the car and would never buy another VW Audi group car unless it was a Skoda.

Blacky, what exactly is your fault?
From JJA's first post:

If you open the driver's door with the key manually, none of the other doors will unlock until you turn on the ignition. This is normal.
Once the ignition is on, the car has decided that you have a working transponder key, so you can then unlock the other doors (either by pulling the handle or by the unlock button on the driver's door).
If the door switch will lock but not unlock the central locks, then it's either the switch is broken, or one of the wires from the switch to the central locking module is broken (probably within the flexible cable duct going through the A pillar).
If your remote fob won't work, replace the batteries, press the keyfob, then unlock the driver's door with the key.

The problem was the convenience unit located under the front passenger footwell. It seem a common fault on the C5 version as water ingress from the under the battery floods into the passenger side footwell and eventually gets inside the convenience unit. Audi wanted over £500 for a replacement, I got one from a scrapyard for £60 and IT WORKS...only issue I still have is I cannot remotely lock or unlock still...Anyone any ideas?

my fault is on a 2007 octavia tour 1.9 tdi
remote central locking completely stopped working on it, batterys replaced and programmed numerous times but same problem
then it was discovered that the manual key locking was not quite right , as in,
PUT KEY INTO DRIVERS DOOR, TURN TO UNLOCK,(EVEN WHEN TURNED TWICE) ONLY UNLOCKS DRIVERS DOOR
ALL OTHER DOORS ARE LOCKED, AND THEY CAN ONLY BE OPENED BY INTERIOR UNLOCK SWITCH WHEN YOU PUT KEY IN IGNITION , AND SWITCH ON.
WHEN YOU REMOVE KEY, AND LOCK DOORS AGAIN WITH KEY, IT LOCKS THEM ALL VIA CENTRAL LOCKING,,BUT AGAIN, TRY TO UNLOCK, NOTHING

this is a video of the actual problem in operation,

I would definitely say it was the convenience unit that is at fault, or a connection or connector to it

I THOUGHT THAT WAS NORMAL. I'm pretty sure that's how my A6 did it if I didn't use the remote. I replaced the fob battery and re-synced the fob.
Of course, your 2007 Skoda not being a pre-2005 A6 C5, it might be slightly different.

I have exactly the same problem with Polo 9N 1.2 2002 model. Can unlock drivers door with key only but can lock all doors with key or remotely. Interior unlock button also not working but lock button works. I have not yet tried opening the doors internally with engine running. Will report back later on this. When I press remote unlock button indicators flash and car beeps but no sound comes from any of the locks. The only error code I found with VAG-COM was:
Address 46: Central Conv. Labels: 6Q0-959-433.LBL
Controller: 6Q0 959 433 E
Component: 3T Komfortgerát 0001
Coding: 00067
Shop #: WSC 00788
VCID: 3D0D4BBD2469
1 Fault Found:
00950 - Central Locking Motor - tailgate (V53); UNLOCK
25-00 - Unknown Switch Condition
Not sure if this is relevant.
Any ideas greatly appreciated from this first-time poster!

Got car running and with key in ignition I tried to open the passenger door from the inside by pulling on the internal handle but although the button pops-up when the interior handle is released the button pops down again. this is true of all the doors. I am going to try substituting the central convenience module with a used one from scrapyard. When remote lock is pressed all doors lock (can hear solenoid activate). When remote unlock is pressed no solenoid sound is heard from any doors/boot although the immobilizer de-activates (red LED stops flashing and indicators flash and car beeps)
Any other ideas gratefully received!:D

How To Program Reprogram Your Audi Remote Key Fob - A4 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/How-To-Program-Reprogram-Your-Audi-Remote-Key-Fob-A4-/10000000010293524/g.html) worked for me when I had a similar problem, fault scan showed nothing, both remote batteries replaced = no dice - all but drivers door on near enough permanent dead-lock (when the lock pops back down after manual unlock attempt with internal handle). I say near enough permanent - try this (at your own risk):
Unlock drivers door with key, get in, close door, turn ignition on (no engine start necessary), turn off, remove key. lock drivers door with door-switch - scarily drivers door is now dead-locked too! Re-insert key into ignition, you'll hear all the deadlocks deactivate and all doors should now unlock and open via internal handle.

I have an 2003 Audi A3 2.0 FSI and had the same problem where the central locking would lock with the key fob but would not unlock.
This just seemd to suddenly start happening one day.
I tried the method above but to no avail.
I had a spare key fob so tried this and found that it worked fine.
I then replaced the battery in the key fob that was not operating properly and hey presto.
I think it is a case of trying all the recommended solutions until you find one that works as the Audi Central Locking Systems seem to have a mind of their own at times.
The most dangerous thing of all on the earlier models like mine is that the car locks itself if you leave the key in the ignition and close the doors.
After 30 seconds, you hear a clunk and the car automatically locks itself.
I constantly live in fear of this happening although I do now have a spare key so all is not lost.
