Hello, I own a VW golf gti mark iii 1993 k reg. The passenger side electric window jammed itself open. I have bought the frame, motor and regulator from Euro Car parts, they said it would be the same price to buy it all and easier to fit. Any advie on how to fit it. I've got the Haynes Man but it's not in there. PLease help.... Is it an easy job or should I take it to a professional. Cheers Karima Ann.

Hi - I must first admit that I haven't carried out this particular job (replacement of entire assembly) but I have spent quite a lot of time messing around inside the doors of my Golf (and other cars) replacing glass etc. and I can tell you that it is best described as fiddly. The first problem you are likely to encounter is getting the interior door trim off. This procedure is not documented anywhere and involves lifting and prising off bits of plastic (around the pull handle and the opening lever) to locate hidden bolts which must be removed. Then the entire door liner (which is held on by about 10 plastic snap connectors) is levered off. A fair bit of brute force (and, in my case, ignorance) is required here, and some of the connectors will inevitably break (and having done all that, if you thought that was difficult, wait till you try getting it back on again!). With the right tools (see below) the actual removal and replacement of the winder assembly is likely to be fairly straightforward (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) but do take note of how it is fitted before pulling it out (as Mr. Haynes is fond of saying - assembly is the reverse of removal...). With any luck, you won't have to disturb the glass itself - just slide it up out of the way - and the electrical connections should be fairly foolproof. Tools required? Not much really - a selection of screwdrivers (Philips and regular), but most importantly, a 10mm socket spanner (preferably a quarter inch drive with ratchet and short extension). Finally, something to help you (as gently as possible) lever off the door liner (or door card as it is quaintly known in the trade). Just remember - this job is carried out at the side of the road in all weathers by largely untrained mechanics, and they rarely take more than an hour or so - how hard can it be? Seriously though - assistance from someone with a bit of experience in this area would be invaluable, and if you can get if off the road for a day or so, even better. Good luck.

After the missus gouged a deep furrow on the NSF and NSR doors, I had to swap both doors out, which included glass (has registration number etched onto it), trim (the one from the scrappie was well manky), mirror, handle and locks. Whole lot really. I found Mr Haynes was quite helpful really. The winder handle was tricky at first until I figured it out!, but since yours is electric, that shouldn't be an issue. The door trim poppers can be a pain - use a large flat bladed screwdriver to prise them off. Don't be too brutal with these, as you could damage the cardboard that the poppers are secured into on the door trim. Between the trim and the metal that is the door, is a sheet of plastic. ******* Parts will sell you a roll of foam for a £8 (IIRC), enough to do two doors - so when you are refitting, just cut it to the required shape. You can't get the original type plastic sheet apparently. It is stuck on with some strong glue - sticks like poo to shagpile carpet. When you put it on, secure it in position with some parcel tape and the poppers ensure it's in securely. As said previously, the tools required are minimal.
TBH, getting to the point where you have access to the inner of the door is the main pain, but not a huge pain at that. Patience is important and 20 mins to get into the door is all that should be needed. Hope this helps a little with at least getting to the bits you need to get at. Once there, I'd expect it to be a fairly logical swap-out procedure.

Wow thanx guys.... I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on. I've already got the door card off so it sounds like I'm half way there! Great advice. K.
