Okay, I've got a DSG problem out of warranty and I'm a bit unsettled. We have 3 x DSG in the family and the newest is on my Passat - 3.5 years old, a mere 21.5k miles.

At the first service at 2 years I flagged up some lack of smoothness when pulling away, which had been there ever since I bought it brand new. They diagnosed the mechatronic unit, ordered parts (9 weeks wait, but that's another story), did the swap and it has been fine since.

Today, out of the blue in traffic, I thought I had it in Sport because it was holding a low gear. Nope, I looked and saw all the gear lights on the display flashing, tried it in manual but it would not change up. I drove 1/2 a mile, found somewhere to park, tried it in reverse and there was no drive. In either direction.

After turning it off and phoning the dealer I tried it again and everything was okay. It's booked in for a look and if the mechatronic unit is at fault I'm still covered, but anything else and I'm goosed. The best case is that I would be be arguing with VW about goodwill and a contribution.

I did all the DSG research before I bought one and went in with my eyes open. I believe that my symptoms are consistent with a mechatronic problem but I need to be sure otherwise I'll chop it in for something else before it gets terminal.

Has anyone else had these symptoms, and what was the diagnosis?

Not sure exactly, but the one thing I notice with mine is after being in reverse the forward gear holds like sport mode until it hits second, almost like a lack of hydraulic fluid thing, I've had the oil changed (I think but maybe not as it wouldn't surprise me if the tech simply did the filter and ticked it out) it is worrying and tbh if you have flashing digits it's most likely the mech unit so yeah get it fixed free if possible and look to getting rid of, I think the DSG is fantastic if it never has to come apart, but once it's no longer factory I think it's a liability, I have one more year to get through then the car has depreciated my money in useage so if it goes bang I will write the car off for spares.

Here's an update so far.

First of all, I've got to say that I'm delighted with the response from the dealer. Instantly helpful on the phone and very accomodating for timing of a visit. I still drive over 50 miles to a place I can trust (my local outfit are a complete shower) and they have never let me down so far.

Anyway, if it is the Mechatronic control unit I am still covered in warranty up to 2 years since the replacement. So here's hoping.

After over two hours in the workshop and a test drive (no charge) they have had to send a report to Germany and will let me know the result. The diagnostic code indicated a faulty presure control valve; neither they nor I know whether it is within the mechatronic or is part of the gearbox itself.

I'm awaiting a phone call with some trepidation. :scared:

If it's going to cost me money then I'm afraid this is my last VAG and I'm off down to the Jag showroom. But like I said, here's hoping.
