air con fan

Hi everybody,im driving a 2000 a4 AMl engine 2.4,i have a problem with the air con fan,it runs on cold start up,without the heating on,then switches off,as per norm i think,however,if i switch on the air con,the fan doesnt run,tho i have no problem with the econ light staying on or off,and the vents blow cold air through the system,so i know the econ switch works ok,and the compressor seems to kick in by the sound of the engine as per the norm.
Ive had the supply voltage tested to the fan,was ok,im being told i need a new air con fan unit,is this the case,or is there a switch or just a sticking fan?any advice would be appreciated

Start with getting someone to do a fault code read and an output test of the fan through the AC ECU.

Hi crasher.and thanks for the reply.My indy didnt give me a fault code for the fan unit,though did give me a fault code for my airbag light on,using vass 5051 but has used 5052 before so i dont know why the 2 versions of vass or as to why i didnt get a fault code read for the fan,i can only sarcastically assume he wants to help me spend my hard earned cash!!!!! :)

5051 and 5052 are similar, just different platforms but I keep mine back for certain types of job VCDS isn't good at as the VAG software is ridiculously slow and clunky. You need to ask for the fan to be checked for the AC unit in Outputs Tests where VCDS is concerned and in Final Control Diagnosis in VAG parlance.

I am not sure to be honest as I have not looked at the diary. Personally I am down all week to do a Scirocco that I am preparing for a visit to the paint shop but when I go and feed the cat tomorrow I will try and remember to take a look in the diary whilst he is scoffing and see what spaces there are. Prod me tomorrow afternoon to see what I find.
