It sounds like a faulty crank speed sensor IF it leaves a code so get it read. If there is no code, that suggests the fuel pump. The crank sped sensor is £54 and is held in by an M6 5-mm head hex key accessed through a hole in the side of the block which is almost impossible to get at without removing the complete oil cooler/filter unit.

This bolt goes into a metal insert in the PLASTIC flywheel seal holder and rusts solid so you cannot get the sensor out and even if you do, there is nothing to screw the new one into as the plastic holder is damaged.

To deal with this is gearbox off, sump off (where you may discover oil pump chain issues) and a new seal holder that MUST be fitted with the special VW jig or it will not start.

If I get a G28 code on these cars my blood runs cold.

Check your fuse boxes for water and corrosion.

The job can run into thousands if the DMF and clutch are replaced which is a sensible move and if the oil pump set up is damaged that can add another £2K to the job so a failed crank sped sensor can easily lead to a £4K bill!
