Timing Belt special tools

I spoke to my tame mechanic today about doing the timing belt/water pump and thermostat on my '02 2.5Tdi Quattro engine.

His computer info system lists a number of special tools for the job, are all these really necessary?

Also does anyone have a set of instructions for changing the belt?

If he doesn't have the right tools and doesn't know if they are needed is he the right man for the job?

After speaking to several independents, some of which claimed to be Audi specialists, I finally entrusted the job to Stafford Audi who did an excellent job for a reasonable price, with a good warranty. The key is to pick a time they are quiet and negotiate on the price.
