Quote for clutch/DFM

Received this quote for clutch/DMF replacement from small independent garage.

Someone said they were recently quoted £550 for the same thing (Sachs) and others have said £800 seems reasonable, so my quote seems a tad excessive? (VW quoted £1,300 a few months ago).

Clutch plate, cover and release bearing = £255

LUK concentric slave cylinder = £50

LUK DMF = £480

Labour, 6 hours @ £35 = £210

Total price therefore a fiver short of a grand :(

Way too expensive, I got mines done for £450 inc parts, labour and fitting. Genuine flywheel and clutch kit all from eBay.

Search on eBay for parts.

Cheapest I can see for the whole kit is around £500 for the Sachs stuff, which is obviously before any labour costs.

Be careful Stu, it's ok buying a "cheap" clutch, but if it doesn't last long it's money wasted, personally I would look for something that isn't LUK and a solid flywheel if one is available.

Years ago it was the thrust bearing that rattled, now it's the flywheel instead which is convenient for some manufacturers as it creates a nice little rub yer hands together moment for them.

Thanks, I was under the impression that the LUK and Sachs gear was much the same quality wise, but I'll bear that in mind.

Also, I think Martin said there was no solid flywheel available for the B6. The garage I got the quote from actually said there was one available, but it was a similar price to the DMF, so not really much point since I've done 145,000 on the original and will only do another 60,000 or so until my taxi is too old, so it's not as if a solid flywheel will last any longer while I've got the car. I was under the impression that the solid flywheels were a lot cheaper, but if not then not really any point in risking the vibration or whatever if there's no advantage in terms of price or longevity.

I wouldn't mind paying VW a tad more to do the job, but if a reasonable indy quote is £800 then another £500 for the 'real deal' is too much of a price difference for a six-year-old taxi with that sort of mileage that I've only got another two years' use of maximum :(

So presumably since eight months have now passed and no word then your £450 price was just a bit optimistic??

So far prices seem to range from Zeb's £450 to £1,000 from my indy to £1,300 from VW (the VW quote was a couple of years ago, so is presumably a bit higher now.)

Does anyone know what a reasonable indy would charge for replacing the clutch/DMF/release bearing/slave cylinder on my bog standard 2006 2.0 TDi 140???

£750-£800 has been quoted to a few members by good-but-reasonable indies. My quote was £780 personally.

Try BVR (links on this site) - good indy in Stoke area - will be less than £700 I'm sure

Looks like you were right bigrich. Just had a call back from bvr automotive & they've come in at £680, that'll save me £100 over what my usual indie quoted (and he's normally very reasonable).

I am shocked by the Prices. I recently changed the Clutch & the release Bearing on MY 2010 VW Passat 1.6 TDI and they charged me 386 pounds including labour by VW Sheffield.

I believe mine is cheaper because it is 1.6 TDI?

The dual mass flywheel is also a £250-£300 part though. It's more expensive than the clutch.

Got it done for a round £1,000, which was down from the original quote of £1,050.

Garage said they'd phoned several different suppliers and got best possible quotes for the parts.

Daresay I could have got it cheaper, but I didn't really shop around - in fact the only other quote I got was £1,300 from VW, and that was a couple of years ago - the clutch has been misbehaving for around 30,000 miles!!

Anyway, I'm trying to find a regular garage that I can trust and isn't too far away from where I stay, and that one fitted the bill, although I daresay if I'd shopped around I could have saved a few quid.

Because it's a taxi and my financial year end is 30 November I wanted to get it into this period as well because I've not got a huge amount of bills this year, so the whole thing was a bit of a last-minute thing, so that was also a factor in choosing the garage I did.

Anyway, that's it done now, so touchwood everything is hunky dory for a while at least!
