There are two pollen filters available for the A3. One has activated carbon, and one does not. The activated carbon variety is aimed at A3's with air conditioning. Activated carbon helps to remove smells developing inside the car. For me I think that is the better option on any car. These filters should be changed each year, or every other year if you inspect them and they are OK. Changing the filter is easy, takes just a few minutes. Having a filter in place will probably fix your cold air problem. The filter should not be missing, since the air management system is designed to operate with a filter permanently in place. Good luck.

Ones behind the glovebox. So you have to get on your back an slide yourself onto the passengers foot mat, and you should see a gray cover with 2 black plastic locking screws. Untwist them an pull of the cover (may need a torch) then you should be able to locate the filter, should just pull out but watch you'r eyes as loads of debris falls out on your face if your not careful, also try to remember the correct way it came out as it would make putting a new one in a lot easier to locate! Hope this helps buddy.
