Hi folks, currently don't have a car, but my van, and fed up of taking girls out in the van! so i've been offered my cousins 2.4 A4 1998 for £600. its done 147,000 but is such a smooth operator. However, there are a few issues, rear shocks are shot, but can get them, but the fuel gauge only ever reads empty, with the large petrol pump sign up all the time, also the airbag light is on, and he's lost the code for the radio..... so what can be done to sort it out and at what cost !. cheers in advance for any help.

First off, if the engine has been looked after with regular services then it will continue to run for quite some time.

Shocks are a simple enough job, 80quid a pair from ECP.

Fuel gauge, need to scan for a fault code, you may need to replace the cluster

Air bags, scan for a fault code. And go from there.

Radio, bin it and get a new HU.

Hope this helps

FWIW, I've seen what hibbsy wrote, but I've heard that that 2.4 engine is a bit suspect, I think something to do with oil consumption. Anyone else care to comment ?
Best wishes
