is it possible to replace the stat the wrong way around .
i ask as since replacing a spurting noise started under bonnet.
soon become apparent that when temp reaches 90 pressure is seemingly building up pushing the coolant to top of coolant tank and overflowing out of the overflow.seem to remember putting the pin side of stat pointing downwards.

Dont think this is possible but even if it should still open.Sounds like the waterpump is failing if its overheating. What model is it?

thanks for the re[ply , its a 1.8 petrol non turbo avv engine 2000yr xreg.
any way of telling for certain its the pump. i understand the impellers are prone to break.
would it be easy enough if you have the right tools.
the gauge takes around 10mile to reach 90 but does not go over that but does tend to go back down to around 60 -70 degrees

Does seem that the thermostat is OK but bubbling at the tank is possibly the pump not 100%.The guage should warn if its overheating.Perhaps it just needs flushing and refilling.

Did you bleed the coolant system thoroughly using the bleed hole in the heater matrix pipe and raising the header tank height? If not then the spluttering you are getting may be air that has been trapped in the system.
Just a thought :)

thanks for the reply's.
i have booked it in with a mechanic i used before thats been fair in the past .
hes quoted £260 for pump replacement or £350 for cambelt at the same time.
£460 QUOTED BY AUDI.
TBH i reckon i could do it myself, if only i had a bit more bottle
