I've seen a few personalised plates recently that I've either thought were clever or made me laugh.

SUICYD - On a BMW 3 Series coupe, the one with the cool rear LEDs from 10 years ago or so.

And the best one I've seen recently was on a white van (a commercial glazing company) in Stockport & it was B16 LAS. Obviously supposed to be BI Glass (Buy Glass), but just looked like Big Lass to me. I thought it would be the most perfect divorce present a guy could get his ex as a parting shot.

Question for any Mod Almighty that reads this - As I was parked up at the time I took a picture of the second one, are we ok to post pictures of clever number plates we've seen, or will that pose a security/Data Protection risk?

Looking forward to seeing some clever plates later from you guys......

oh that reminds me, coming past Colchester the other week there was a white range rover with the number plate E55EX G going the other way on the a12. not cool, but at least it was a bit imaginative!

Macbeth is excellent. Blobbob's good too, wonder if it's Noel Edmonds or the guy inside Mr Blobby.

There is one on a Range Rover round here that's B10 NDE. There's a lot of Footballers' Wives types driving Chelsea Tractors round here but that one stuck in the memory.

Many years ago when the first Renault Clio Williams was released there was a lawyer from the Aberdeen area that had a private plate on it.. It was CL 10 apparently he was taking Renault to court over them showing his plate in their adverts..

Should the question not be, what private best displays a gratuatous and vulgar waste of money and bad taste the best?

Never understood them as you might be able to tell.

Make sure you don't put one on your convertable as you actually be able to hear me call you a **** rather than having rely on lip reading it!

Saying that, there was a porch 911 round here years ago that had B1 CEP, he was a right ****.

There is a House along the Embankment in Chelsea, he has a Range Rover and a Aston Martin and they are always parked next to each other, Range on the Left, Aston on the Right. He must be an Actor as the Range Rover has a Plate that says 2 BE & the Aston say NOT 2B. I always wonder if when he is choosing what car to take out that day if he asks himself "2 BE or NOT 2B?" (Terrible Joke, sorry!!)

A guy near me has a Black CLS 63 AMG in Black and the Number plate is FAT 50 and he is rather Obease!!

But the best one i've seen is POW 3R on a Lamborghini Murchialago.

Don't want to blow my own trumpet and it wasn't really a personal plate as such, just relevant to the car, but years ago I used to have a Honda Civic 1.6i-VT (the first of the VTEC engined Honda, along with CRX of course). I bought the plate 'RPM 8K' for 50 quid. Pretty ****, but I thought it was the dog's.

I work on the Olympic Park in Stratford. I saw a Black Mitsubushi L200 type Truck Thing pulling out of the entrance with big wheels and Blacked out windows. The Plate was DR06 DOG he had put a screw on the top of the 0 to make it into a U so it then read

DRUG DOG.

I thought "you <removed>, i bet the police pull you all the Time!!" but i then realised it was the Sniffer dog van, so it was actually a pretty Cool plate.

Just had a quick look at the most expensive reg plates ever bought & I'm gobsmacked. The highest price ever paid in the UK was for the reg 'F1'. Pretty cool I admit, but is it worth £440,000? Apparently bought by Afzal Khan, a Bradford based entrepreneur for his £200,000 Mclaren Mercedes (the website quoted this car value, I thought a Mclaren SLR if that's what they mean was more like £340,000 from new). The reg is worth over twice the value of the car if the website is accurate!!

The worldwide record for the highest price however is for the reg '1'. Bought by Saeed Abdul Ghaffer Khouri of the United Arab Emirates for - and I 'BL11FF U' not (get it? Bluff u), £7.25 MILLION!!!! I'd love to have the sort of money that would allow me to buy a registration for the same amount that would get me 7 Bugatti Veyrons.

A3 Cabrio with the plate CH11ICO, possibly called Chico?
An A8 with the plate 1 LET, fair to assume he owns a lettings agents.
a Ferrari with the reg S40HA. There was a stud in the 0to make it look like a C so it read S4CHA, not brilliantly obvious in the picture unfortunately.
And the best by far I've seen today, a Bentley Continental with the plate XTR44S. Pure class. Fortunately had a colleague in the car to get a picture.

Sam
23-03-2012, 11:59 AM
£250 seems to be the DVLA's entry price.

Unless your initials are XEY and your car is an A6 (or you drive on the A6 a lot?) I can't see it appealing to the masses?

Brycie
23-03-2012, 06:39 PM
Yeah, the Jaguar one's good though. I though it was just me with the A6 XEY, I didn't get it at first. A6 SXY would be better, but maybe a bit girlie then (sorry Kenny :o).

I did see a BMW 3 Series today with a reg that I definitely wouldn't want. Maybe it's because I have a smutty childish sense of humour, but DU11LSX looked at first glance to me like Dull Sex. Not something I'd want on my reg anyway.

Saw one in Blantyre over thye weekend that was totally out of keeping with the owner and the car in my opinion. It was H4RDR looking like Harder. But it was a skinny guy in his late fifties/sixties with grey hair & glasses driving a Corse in non metallic blue from circa 2002-2004 at a guess, and not a particularly nice model. I'd expect that to be on something like a Nissan L200 Warrior pick up truck, or an M5 driven by a cage fighter.

I knew a chap who used to own a chain of amusement arcades across the SE - he had identical Range Rovers with the numberplates 1 FUN and FUN 1. Lots of tales of being stopped at different times and being told that while he owned most of the coast he wasn't above the law and couldn't just change his numberplate as and when he wanted.

There used to be a custom Bug ~15/20 years ago roaming Kent with WOW 110T on a square plate with a bolt between the two ones. I last saw the plate ~10 years ago on a Plymouth Prowler.

and!

I saw a white Transit (fastest thing on the road, outside lane of the M25, mach 3) a few years ago with a variation of BUILDER as it's plate. I can't remember how it was made up B111 DER, B1 LDA, not sure - it had a lot of bolt covers to mask various parts of the letters/numbers.

I don't get the 1TFN or TFN1, am I being braindead here? Unless it was TFN1 which meant Tiffany.

I feel like it's a bit tame after WH05HAT, PU51BAR and BOLLAXS, but here goes anyway. I can't remember if it was in St Helens or Birkenhead today, but I saw SA11EYS looking like Salleys on a black Merc convertible. The other one I saw in Ellesmere Port today was a dumper truck which I tried to take a pic of in traffic, but the sun kind of washed the picture out. It was a garden centre lorry which had Top Soil, Turf, Compost etc listed on the back & the reg was GO 09 MUD looking like GOOD MUD.

By luck I own N17LAN. For a show plate if a inverted 'L' is used instead of the 7 it reads 'NOLAN', or even as 'N17LAN' it looks pretty much like 'NOLAN'. It used to belong to a Mr Nolan.

Although this thread was came to a natural end & quite rightly as there were some spots that just couldn't be topped, I had to resurrect it for the reg I saw in Blackburn tonight as it's good and vag related. As I drove past what I assumed was an A5, I just spotted the reg RS5 3OSS. IVe seen one or two R8 at the garage it was parked at too, there must be money in owning a tyre fitting garage.

So annoyed at myself..... didn't take my phone as I was just nipping ip to the garage at the top of my road, so I didn't get pictures. When I got there I saw a motorhome with the plate LUV5 1T, and then at the pump itself was a Lambo (Murcielago I think) with the plate NOT 5LOW. The lambo was a nasty eggshell blue though.

For anyone with a newer car than me - this is available http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/buy.html?plate=AU61 AAA&price=399

Worst I've seen was a DBx with Y15 TON. They used a modified Y with a thinner left "arm", leaning the 1 over at the top to meet it and put in a stud to make an A out if it, so that it read (with some imagination) A5TON. OK, it works, but on a car that nice it was a cheap hack IMO.

That Aston is well nice! I've never been a fan of plates personalised to cars. At AITP there was a man with one which was something like S4 CAB...but it was a saloon. I'm guessing either he used to have a cabriolet or his initials are CAB. Either way, it looked odd an an s4 saloon ha!

On the M4 yesterday near London...

X5 (had badge of M50d) JO11NNY with a black screw cover placed between 11 to make JOHNNY

M5 it had V10 ON U (spaced out just like that)

I've Seen the JOHNNY just off the M4....

My favourites to date for sheer over the top displays of ego and clarity of reading (i hate the ones that dont quite work more than the ones that do) have been....

#1 - the guy who took over a boxing gym i used to go to, was a local gangster and ran a loan shark business, had PAY UP on his AMG Merc...(the U was done with a stud and some 1's or L's or something).
#2 - on a very blinged up Porsche Cayenne in London i saw COS I CAN (i forget which were letters and numbers - you could hardly tell).

The worst i saw was some guy who did some work on my house was a Chelsea fan. He went to great lengths telling me how mad he was on Chelsea FC (i think he may have been a Glaswegian??).
He finished off by showing me his Mondeo with the plate CHO SEA to which i immediately said "but that says Chosea not Chelsea". Unfazed he replied that if you said it in a certain way it sounded close enough.

A few I've seen recently that I can remember:

A lady motorbicyclist on the M6 had X99 HOG. It was a hog style bike btw.

Also on the M6, S41EED passed my followed by R8OUL (Saieed & Raoul I assume).

Merc of some description with the reg L11V YU with the bolt placed to make it read LUV YU.

And local to here is a Q5 or Q7 (can't remember now) with DEN15E.

Chris, it was definitely a combination of the two that did it - let's face it, every bloke's dream. Reminded me of that hot chick in the sports car in National Lampoons Vacation.

Man Le Mans, you never know mate, she may fancy doing some charity work & slumming it with a fat bald bloke - I can dream can't I?

Whippy, sadly not, but that's what an imagination's for. One for the bank anyway lol.

His surname is Mann & his first initial is C (don't want to put his full name up) and his reg was M7NCY. Now I know he was trying to spell out Mann C, but to me it just looked like Mincy. Not a good look.

Great thread and what a load of cobblers! ;)
To add my own cobbler to what's gone so far, the plate BEN21E was for sale some time back in NE Scotland. With my surname being BENZIE I was very interested - but not at the asking price of £19,000!
Instead, my Audi A8 4.2 now proudly bears the registration E12NEB, bought for £400 from DVLA. Reverse logic rules!

Heading towards the M6 at Preston, a car with the plate V6 XJR (or was it V8 XJR). It was a *** btw ;)

In Wolverhampton, an older Merc with the plate 808BOY. Which I could see was trying to say Bobby. It wouldn't have made this thread if I'd seen the car in any other area than the Black Country, but the accent there actually makes BOBBOY, the correct phonetic spelling.

Last Friday night I saw SH11 TUP. Now this is Essex and the car was within 200 yards of the Sugar Hut so there were a couple of carefully placed black screws underneath the two 1s and the T was of course in the wrong place. It did look convincingly like SHUT UP, or phonetically around here....SHAAAAAA' AAAAAP. Thing is, I would have expected it to be on a white RR Sport with 24" rims and diamante door handles (v. common around here) but no....it was on a Ford C Max.

And I see most days WE62 TER on an Evoque. Cracking plate but for my liking a bit too memorable and close to (presumably) the person's name.

I used to own a ford Ka (don't start) it was heavily modified with both turbo and nitrous way before Ford conceived a sport Ka.
The reg plate was R112LUT, I did the same with the 11 and used an S backwards for the 2 it then looked like RU SLUT
Oh to be young and foolish again ;)
