For several years now our 1998 A4 Avant 1.9 TDi (AFN) has suffered with the well known curse of the airbag warning light remaining lit when running. Normally a quick wiggle of the connectors under the front seats followed by a reset via a Eurotel hand held scanner has resolved the problem, for anything from a few weeks to several months.
Recently however when connecting the scanner, I get a message that tells me that there is no communications between the scanner and the control module. So, as I have been reconditioning this car I thought I'd have a stab at fixing this ongoing problem.
The first thing I did was to change the seats from cloth to leather, I bought an identical donor Avant more than a year ago with this plan in mind. On this, the donor car the airbag warning light behaves as it should. I checked this before buying the car, which was an MOT fail on front suspension arms. I removed the airbag module (located under the radio/aircon control unit in the centre console) from our car. I removed the donor cars module at the same time, to my joy both had the same part numbers, so a simple swap should solve the problem...No! I'm still getting the same 'unable to communicate ' message. At this point, I think it's time to ask for your help and opinions. I'm no sparky, is it time to start looking for broken wires ect?
I will await all replies with interest. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
Kind Regards.
