Thanks Kite, does it handle the phonebook okay and still display the caller ID if it is in the database etc ?

John

I've a B8 with factory fit Bluetooth and the Galaxy S2 (stock contacts app etc)

I've had no problems and it works just fine. You get caller ID in the main MMI screen and also in the speedo area display. Address book, last number redial etc works spot on. The transition from phone speaker/mic to car speaker/mic is as you'd expect seamless.

The only criticism I can level (and it's a small one) is that it can take a while to cycle with the rotary MMI wheel through all your contacts in your address book. If you spin it pretty quick it starts to jump through to the next letter rather than the next contact.

I seem to remember with my Blackberry if you had a massive call history list it didn't like it and you had to periodically clear it out, but I don't think I've had that problem on the S2.

Sounds pretty normal then..

I am transitioning from a Nokia E72 to a Galaxy S2 tomorrow...

Irrespective of the phone as an android phone you should have the same functionality as other android phones... Noting your old phone is a Nokia.

Although it can depend on implementation of the Bluetooth protocol by the manufacturer.

You'll have no problems with the Samsung as they are pretty good in that respect.

As you may be able to tell, android phones and their software is a hobby of mine ;-)

My daughter has a HTC Wildfire (Android), and although the Bluetooth would pair with the phone and you could make and receive calls, the contacts database was garbled when the Audi MMI uploaded it and I just couldn't get this to work.

I believe the issue may have been the way the contacts were stored on the phone - as you see when you open up contacts you see lots of different data fields within which to store data. The bluetooth protocol related to phone data only reads certain data fields and even then the data has to be in a particularly format or else it will display incorrectly.

Both my HTC Desire (albeit on a custom ROM) and now Xperia Arc pair without any problems with the Audi.

A couple of suggestions - make sure you select the correct profile on the phone (hands free or something similar if it offers a choice). Also try having a search on the market to see if there is an app that can help.

I'll also have a look to see if I can find any problems that are noted on other 'techy' websites.

How about here:

http://www.htc.com/uk/help/htc-wildfire/ for instructions on the bluetooth setup (just to check you are doing it correctly) - also does the wildfire have the latest software?

And finally what about here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=678

Might take a little while to find a solution but I guarantee someone on here will have found the answer!!

Thanks, I have now paired the Galaxy S2 with my cars bluetooth, but it doesn't work perfectly.

The problems I have are that it downloads my contacts okay (106 entries), but those that have home and work numbers are now shown as double entries and whats worse you can tell which is which by scrolling through the items. Also, the MMI spends ages syncing with the phone as opposed to about a minute as with the Nokia, and my phone keeps bleeping with a message "phonebook data request" for 5 or 10 minutes or longer.

So far I am underwhelmed with the interworking, so if anyone has any tips as to what they did to make it work better please let me know.

Right then...

First and foremost I believe the limitation to be within the Audi software - or at least Audi have implemented a fairly limited phone/address book.

You will have seen already that your phone has multiple fields within which you can enter different phone numbers / email addresses / physical addresses not to mention user defineable areas. The Audi system will, as far as I know, only recognise the first 'phone number - anything else will either fail or result in double entries.

To test this you can get contact and delete all the numbers in it until you only have one - link with the car and see what is displayed - does it display just one field?

Another thing to test - where are your contacts on your phone from? For a while I had inputed both manual contacts and then also from my gmail address - this resulted in a load of duplicate entries; however, my phone (a HTC Desire at the time) being 'smart' had linked all the similar contacts together so to me (on the phone) all I could see was a single contact - in reality there were 2 (and sometimes 3) contacts stored which, when connected to the car revealed themselves!

I reckon the MMI is taking ages because it is trying to examine all the input fields of each of your contacts (I suspect that within the Nokia you probably had less flexibility when entering contacts - i.e. there were fewer user configurable fields).

So...what to do...

First question I have is where are the contacts coming from...did you manually enter them or transfer them some other way?
I presume you are using a google account - a good way of properly sorting out your contacts is to log into your google account (using your googlemail address and password) - go to the google home page and click on the link in the top right corner...

Once logged in, then click on the drop down menu on the top right again...

Click on 'account settings' (most people have never seen this before!!) - this is where google store all sorts of information about you!

click on 'dashboard - view data stored with this accout'

Then scroll down until you see 'contacts' then click on 'manage contacts'

Now edit the different entries and tidy them up.

Once complete - you should then go back to your phone and go to 'settings - accounts & sync - click on your account under 'manage accounts' then click on the account you've just edited in google - then deselect contacts and reselect - this will force a sync. All the change you've made should then appear on your phone.

Then try pairing again - and see what happens. Remember the whole purpose behind an Android phone is that your contacts are stored in the 'cloud'

Next on to the constant 'phonebook data request' - I would recommend deleting the current pairing and then re-pair - at some stage there should be a pop up dialogue saying something like 'grant permission' - if there is a check box that say 'remember my response' or 'don't ask again' or 'remember my selection permanently' make sure you click it. This will make sure you don't get bothered with the request again.

Hope this helps, don't hesitate to ask any questions and I'll try my best - might take a couple of days due to other commitments though!
