Oli sorry to hear this, now you do really need to get it out, so there are a few ways to do this, first is to use a pair of grips on the plug and as you turn it pull upwards, if your lucky this will get the old one out, you will then have to recoil/hele coil the glow plug thread, maybe a mobile mechanic in your area can do this??? im not 100% on the mk4 but i know the mk5 golf stores a code if a glow plug is not working, also if you dont get it out there is a chance the compression will blow it out, you could hold a THICK rag over the plug and have someone start the engine, not a good thing to do as the plug could come out with some force so IF YOU TRY THIS BE VERY CAREFULL, if you try the above and still cant get it out then you may have to remove the head but that would be a last resort, even after removing the head you will still have to recoil the glow plug tread

hope this is of some help mate
