Hi. New boy here. I have recently bought a 01Y V6 4motion. The car has a full VW history with the last service less than 1000 miles ago. The car runs perfectly except when i try tight moves eg. parking. I'm sure I'm getting axle wind up especially when reversing. I thought the haldex clutch was meant to allow tight moves without this happening. I have reached the conclusion I have a serious problem. Something has failed? I'm guessing this is a big money fix. Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Yeah your right the haldex clutch is ment to let you do that, why it is not i'm not sure only a garage could tell you. What i have heared from people is that a new 4 wheel system can cost up to £4000 to have it fitted by VW, so it would prob not pay to go to them and have the work done. you might find that it is the rear diff, maybe.
would someone please explain what axle wind up is. I've never heard the term before.
thanks.

i think its a winding sort of noise that comes from the differentials ?

Axle wind up is what happens when one wheel is turning faster than the other, typically while carrying out a tight full lock reverse. Basically the haldex clutch should allow slip in the rear diff so that the inner wheel in the turn can revolve at a different rate from the outside one.
If the diff doesn't allow some slip then the axle literally twists under the force of the torque causing the inner wheel to lock/sieze. The sensation is of the inner wheel tightening up.
I think this is whats happening.
Hopefully Awesome can find out whats wrong later this week.
