Never had issues with any of my PD powered cars (in terms of engine)
Always been rock solid, and my current pd130 is pushing 260bhp but still being nicely reliable. :) Also returning better than standard economy. Mustn't grumble!

I see your in the "north east".....South Shields man myself....
Bear in mind that these forums are a very skewed sample of VAG owners.
They are enthusiasts, many with older cars because they are young and lots have them have sought out this site because of problems with their cars.
My family run three Passats, two of which are PD130 estates and the total mileage on the cars will be 400K. They have never let us down and the engines are the least of our worries.
Use the right oil. Change it at least at VW specified intervals and preferable become competent enough to do all your own routine work.
so you do not get messed about but the dealers.

Filters from GSF and Eurocarparts will be fine and will probably be OEM from the likes of Mann.
I do buy my bits from eBay, Jennyd-closet sells a set for a good price. Dsgwagen is a VAG Main Dealer selling parts on eBay at a good price.

i agree with the points made above, the trouble with forums is that ANY issues will be highlighted quite prominantley, but ill bet if you ask any member on here, they wouldnt change their car for the world....
i'm very happy with my golf, not once has it missed a beat *touches wood* and i've not yet met a single vw owner who has been unhappy with their car.
My view is that they are very sensitive to maintenance or lack of and nowhere near as robust as the old rotary pumped engines.
The 8v Pd's also seem to be better the the newer 16v 2.0 units as well although high milage examples at the moment are quite rare.
I wonder what the next generation of common rail piazo injector equiped units will be like?
Interesting to find out who has got the most miles on a PD? (I feel a poll coming on... no, not that kind of poll you filthy monkies)

Maybe we can put your mind at rest. What kind of common problems have you read about regarding PD engines?
Don't forget it depends on many factors including maintenance, driving conditions and the generally the history of the car if you're not the first owner. I must agree with agree with BigCol, newer and more technically advanced engines (such as the PD) do require a little more attention i.e. specific engine oil.
Like the other members have said, if you have a problem with your car, people tend to register with the appropriate forum and post their problems there.
I can't see many people posting threads each and every day they have enjoyed driving/owning their car. (Maybe we should start a VAG appreciation thread ;))
