Afternoon all,

I'd appreciate some advice on what to do - my 2001 B5 audi A4 1.9tdi lost power on the motorway sliproad last night and would not restart.

The AA recovered us after trying to get it going after fault diagnosis - cam postion sensor error was showing up.

Local garage today are saying they are sure some teeth have come off the cambelt and hence the sensor fault.

They are waiting for my instruction as to what to do - car has done 170000 and cambelt changed at 120000 - was due soon but was within recommended mileage and dates. Car was fully serviced and recently had all shocks replaced and suspension sorted - passed last mot with no advisories.

The garage are suggesting options of scrapping the car, paying for the belt to be replaced and seeing if the engine works, changing the engine or potentially selling it to one of the mechanics for him to take a risk on replacing the belt.

What would members do? Is there likely to have been engine damage when the cambelt failed? - I was doing about 40mph when it happened if this is relevant

A friend has suggested talking to my insurance - is this a good idea?

If I was to sell it to the mechanic - what is a reasonable price?

Get the cylinder head off and check for damage, if there isn't any then you can get the cambelt done, make sure the put a new tensioner fitted, also get them to check the injector pump as there is a small 'woodruff' key (small semi circle piece of metal) in the pulley. When I replaced my cambelt the injector pump bolt came loose and the woodruff key was destroyed.

So you may be lucky in finding that it was just the key on the pump has gone and the injection pump is out.

tommyo where abouts are you based mate? if not to far i could have a look at it for you, as for how much its worth as is the truth is whatever you can get for it, i would have thought there would be some valve damage, also you could get a good sh head and fit that save on the head rebuild

Thanks for the advice and offers - based north of manchester so not really local to you phil - my internet research suggests all pd tdi engines are interference ones, replacing the cylinder head head is beyond my ability so one way or the other will sadly get rid as it doesn't owe me anything.

Thats fair enough mate a head change can be a little intense, it may be worth talking to the garage and seeing how much they would give you for it and compare with ones on ebay that have cambelt failure to get an idea what they go for
