hi folks

How can I tell what kind of engine I have (I mean code wise) I have a 2008 Avant S Line 2.0 T FSI and wondering if my engine code letters are...? not that I am thinking of converting it to LPG right now, as I want to do more research and I know the issues relating to the TFSI engine, but some of the LPG companies have now developed the technology to convert the dirent injection engines but it depends on what engine you have (hence my question) and it will give me something (perhaps) to consider. I have gone from a diesel to a petrol due to previous car being written off, it was counter intuative to change but I found a great deal on an Audi Approved used 2008 - everything in my mind told me not to buy a petrol but to find a similar model in diesel i would have to have paid an extra min. £2-3k and that was from a non franchised dealer. i worked out the figures and based on published mpg's for both the petrol and the 2.0 TDI I am worse off by £165.38 per year so it would take me a long time to get a return on the premium I'd have to pay upfront for the diesel - and I had a budget to keep to. I went for the approved used one due to the warranty/2 years free servicing/MOT insurance, etc. and so far I'm returning 36.9 mpg on a combined drive to work etc. (ok I'm driving like a pensioner) but I am not so paranoid now and constantly looking at the mpg display. I am sure that habit will go. Getting back to the LPG, I know if I change it will invalidate my warranty but I am just interested and hence asking my engine code.

Another thing is how do I find out my paint code for a 'touch up' pen as someone took some paint off the plastic door handle (kid on a new Christmas bike without stabalisers) it's just a bit but as it is white plastic underneath it stands out (to me anyway).

Any help appreciated and anyone in Glasgow area up for a chat let me know - thanks again.

Hi,

You can find your engine code in the front of your service book, on your V5 under engine number or in your spare wheel well in the boot on a sticker.

Your paint code should also be in the front of your service book and on the sticker in the boot too!

Still waiting for the V5 but will look in the service book - what should I be looking for in terms of engine code and paint code ? apologies for being 'thick' but I am a quick learner !

thanks again

Along with the sticker there will be words down the left hand side of this. You cant miss it. Just look for the engine code and paint code line and read accross.

Hi,

Be careful regarding LPG conversion. I've had several cars over the years, and both the installer and the system chosen to do the job are very important if you want a good, reliable system.

Additionally the FSI engines are more complex to convert, not just due the injection type, and requiring the LPG to be injected as a fluid rather than a vapour, but also the petrol is used to cool the valves. The systems coming on stream for these engines are fairly new, and all require petrol to continue to be used in smaller quantities. You may also need to add flashlube. Get things wrong and your engine will be damaged.

I know of a very good and knowledgeable person in the industry that has converted this type of engine in the past, PM me if you'd like his details. He is one of the few people I would trust to do conversions having learned the hard way in the past !!

As you say, all things considered the payback time for LPG is longer on these engines.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Much appreicated - I spoke to someone yesterday who described everything you said regarding the FSI engines. It will all come down to my return on investment payback and it may take longer than I first thought (with some worries about long term damage). I will PM you to discuss your contact.

thanks again
