Just bought a Passat B5.5 and this is one of the things I have to fix!
I've read up on this and understand what the problem is (re-circ flaps/motor not working properly).
I've tried doing a factory reset of the motor via VCDS but to no avail (can some one please just confirm again the steps needed to do this > I went to the HVAC module, adaption, channel 00 > read/save).
I'm thinking the motor almost certainly needs replacing (car has done 116K), but I'm reading horror stories of having to remove the whole dash. Has anyone managed to replace the V71 motor without removing the whole dash, ie via removing the glovebox?
Thanks.

I once heard a rumour that Harry Houdini did it so I tried it myself, I can assure you it must have been just a rumour! The dash is the least of your worries, but with effort and patience you can do the replacement without removing the HVAC unit (if you know a friendly dentist to loan you his tools).
p.s. have you seen what i.e. spell suggests for your username? its a seldom-seen part of a womans anatomy!http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/caldirun/passat/IMG_0913.jpg
Not for the faint-hearted and then there is the difficult bit to come!

Ok - I'm not 100% certain that when I'm trying to reset the motor, I'm doing it the correct way.
Can someone please give me a simple step-through guide on how to reset the motor to factory settings AND/OR how to reclibrate/change the settings on the motor. I have VCDS-Lite (registered), if that makes a differance.
Thanks-in-advance

Go into Auto HVAC, select measuring blocks, set 005 (should show V71 air flap motor if you have the lable files loaded), click Go to basic settings. The values should go up to a very high value and then return to zero, if your splined pinion has split the actual value wil not change much. This procedure is to reset the thing WHEN you have replaced the actuator!
