A4 Avant limp mode problems

Please can anyone help,

I have an audi a4 avant 02, recently the car was left standing for a while and the battery went flat.

I changed the battery and the car would just turn over and not fire up for a while. then eventually it started coughing and spluttering.

Now the ECS light and the ESP light is on and it wont let me rev the engine.

I have had it code read and a fare few codes came up, it let us erase all the codes apart from one (P0686) earth fault on main relay, my question is were is the relay and how do i rectify this.

Power Supply Relay for Engine Control Module (J271) faulty
Wiring between Engine Control Module (J220) and Power Supply Relay for Engine Control Module (J271) faulty

Possible Solutions


Check/Replace Power Supply Relay for Engine Control Module (J271)
Check Wiring between Engine Control Module (J220) and Power Supply Relay for Engine Control Module (J271)
Check/Replace Engine Control Module (J220)

I can not thank you enough i have had a so called Audi Technician look at my car with a diagnostic machine and he did not no what the fault was that his machine was telling him.
So i took it upon my self to e-mail this forum.
So thanks to you i managed to find the main relay (which is situated under the ecu) sat in a pool of water.
I bought a new relay from audi (£20.45) soaked up the water and re sealed the box, the car fired up first key.
So once again thank you very much.
