1.8 20v is a timing belt. Double-check log-book for specific engine code for ordering parts. Renew every 60k or 4 years including water-pump and thermostat.

Well spotted! http://serve.mysmiley.net/happy/happy0034.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net)
Diesel 4 cylinder (60k) or 6 cylinder V6 (80k) TDIs.
Petrol 4 cylinder 1.8-2.0 5V engines are up to 115,000 miles. Would you let it get to this mileage, or are the majority of timing belt changes you do up to a maximum of 80-90k?

The 97 ADR engine cam belt change interval is 76K miles and they are well known for failing before this when on the original belt.
There was a Technical Product Information notification on this engine up to the 98 (W chassis) model year covering a particular range that is a little vague and this may not have been done as it was only issued two years ago so if the car was built before W chassis (eg. WAUZZZ8DZVA115175) TPI 511603/6 should be carried out which means fitting the appropriate Audi repair kit and hydraulic tensioner.
