SHARAN stuck in 4th gear!

Hi, I've got a '99 diesel sharan and it's been superb for the last six years, brilliant versatile family motor. But...on the way to work today I went to change down from 4th at a junction but the gearstick was mega-sloppy and moved in any direction. After a stall and a high-rev restart I managed to get it home. The clutch is ok, but the gearbox is stuck in 4th. Has anyone got any ideas? Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks for that. Do you know if the linkage is external and accessible or does it run internally in the box?

Connections are two cables on the top of the gearbox, towards the rear. Not easy to see as its mostly under the battery. Theres quite a bit to remove to get to them, although I think you may be able to feel up from underneath, might be worth a try before pulling all the battery and associated bits out.
