Rubber or carpet mats?
Rubber mats can take soapy water and power hose to clean them :)
Not sure about carpet mats though
I put my carpet mats in the washing machine......dont tell SWMBO

Carpet matts. Don't really fancy blasting them with a pressure wash or putting them in the washing machine.
They're the thick audi matts. Dont mind taking time etc.

Seriously, jet washing them is the way. You won't damage them, but it will remove everything, even deep in to the pile. I do mine a couple of times a year, makes a hell of a difference :) just let them drip dry over the bath for a couple of hours, then chuck em in the airing cupboard over night. They will look like new!

I'd be more inclined to jet wash thick manufacturer mats than cheap ebay specials - I can't think of any other way (besides those already mentioned) to clean floor mats, unless you've got a large toothbrush and a lot of patience!
washing machine and a spin leaves them dry enough to put back in the car
I used the power hose on my Audi carpet mats.

I know this is a late reply but when I was moving house, I rented the rug doctor carpet cleaner and gave the whole interior a clean with it, seats, carpet, roof, the lot and I must say I have never seen it so clean!
I suppose a vax would do the same job.
