There's a cooler matrix behind the fog lights of my A6 avant. Mine is weeping oil from what looks like an impact.
Can someone tell me if this is an engine oil cooler or a gearbox oil cooler.

Thanks, Rob

PS A6 Avant, 2.7 TDi, Manual gearbox, not Quattro

i mate that will be your intercooler . your car is a tdi turbo diesel intercooler you can get a bit of engine oil in it thats normal it is designed to cool the air entering the engine if it is damaged and leaking oil you need to replace it as it will be effecting the cars performance

Yes, sbt, you could be right.
I can't find a decent diagram on the web but eBay has something that looks about the right shape and size http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-A6-ALLROAD-RIGHT-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-078145806K-/200627798028?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eb659400c#ht_568wt_1163

I was surprised not to see more oil because that would be under pressure and this is just barely noticeable. My car has done 140K miles so I would not be surprised if the turbo wasn't leaking a bit of oil from the bearings.
Still runs beautifully at the moment but I'll make sure the insurance claim repair covers it all.

Cheers, Rob

yes thats the part on ebay . i would not expect to see much oil for one it only a very lite mist of oil that enters it from the crank case breather system and two its not preasurised
