Evening all,
Liz was parked up 2 days ago with the engine running. For some reason the emissions light came on. I put it down to randomness at the time as the day before I'd had both the abs and traction control lights come on but they went off when I cut the power and didn't come back on. Also had "check 3rd brake light" but that's ok now too. However, the emission light is still on, solid, and won't go out. The car has done 80k but only does short trips (under 10 miles at a time)
I've checked all plugs and coil packs after measuring the coil resistances and all are ok. Runs fine, not lumpy, idles around 850rpm. Are their regular faults I should look for? Common vacuum hose failures etc? Can I test the O2 sensors or measure their outputs somehow (voltage/mA etc)? All help appreciated!
P.s. Did some searching and wiggled the cables from the brakes and no more TC/abs lights.
Edit: just remembered the central locking is intermittent too, hence why I was thinking bad earth (abs and TC lights Intermittent, central locking intermittent, check brake Light once)
Thanks
Rick

Get the codes read, dont just stab in the dark at it, the EML could be something as stupid as a brake light switch mate, its not always an engine component!

Does it reach 90 degrees and stick there, if not it's possibly a faulty themostat, this makes the engine run cooler and adjusts the ecu to put more fuel through, this in turn gets picked up by the exhaust sensor and makes the engine management light come on. This happened to a mates 1.8T, once a new thermostat was fitted and the fault codes re-set the engine management light stayed off.

Check coil resistance, all coils are the same. All plugs ok. Runs dead in the middle of the temperature guage. Did find that the intake to the head was all gunked up so cleaned it out and taped up the split (see video). Got error codes read, only one. P1137 - fuel trim bank 1 too rich (add) lower limit reached. Guess next steps are O2 sensors and MAF. MAF looks clear but don't know how I can test it.
Any guidance on testing O2 sensors and MAFs?
Took a video, you'll see the taped up bit and another little jobbie I focus on. The little jobbie is clicking all the time (guess its a relay) but I don't know if that's good or bad. It has Sagem written on it. What does it do? It's clipped onto the air pipe just before the airflow sensor. also noticed a sucking noise from thought hand side of the bay, but guess this is vacuum stuff so not a leak?

Also, can i reset the light/code by disconnecting the battery? Wondering if unclogging the inlet pipe made a difference. Guess ill only know if i turn off the light and wait to see if it comes on again.
All help appreciated guys and gals!
Rick
you could try a battery disconnect

Hi, Rick. Watched your video and thought my pics would be useful in relation to taped up split pipe.

I've spent about 20 minutes with piece of hard plastic pipe and solder iron and joined it to breather valve with oil resistant rubber pipe. This way there's definitely no vacuum leak in the intake in this spot

And that clicking thing is purge valve for EVAP system. On my car it doesn't click all the time. I think it should only click open every now and again to let petrol fumes from adsorber to be sucked out into intake

hi everyone,
Hope someone can help does anybody know anyone around sheffield/worksop ares with a fault code reader i had the flashing coil light on a couple of times but now thats gone and the engine management light has come on (orange) the car is still under the dealer warranty (not franchise) but didnt want to drive the car for an hour + up the motorway, just want to know what the fault is so i dont get fobbed off by the dealer.
i've only had the car 3 weeks (08 plate A4 B8 S-Line) had a BMW 320d until the swirl flaps let go !!! so turned to Audi !!!! really hope this wasnt a mistake as im skint now and couldnt afford a large bill. :-/
