View Full Version : Please Help Knocking/Ticking from 2.0TDI Engine
Yes, I know it's "normal" from a diesel engine, but this sounds slightly different from the "normal" diesel knocking sound...
It is only presant at cold starts and it seems to dissappear after 5-8min of running.
So, now I'm thinking of adding some of these "additive lubricants" to the oil, like "slick50" or something, but obviously specificaly for diesel engines.
Anybody with the same problem? Any one care to share their experience, or suggestions?
The car was has a full service history and was last serviced at 54000mile and has done 58000miles.
I have a VAG COM cable which I used to do a diagnosis but no engine fault codes were found, so it would seem as though the sensors have not picked up anything.
Oh, and I have of course checked the oil which is well in the middle of the marked/hached are on the oil stick.
Any suggestions?

If it aint broke then dont fix it!
Seriously, are you talking about a ticking that has appeared or is it a noise that has been there since you have owned the car?
A lot of Manufacturers use technology which for someone from the "Old Skool How an Engine works" is fairly complex and until someone comes up with the "Oh yes thats the "startup pump" or some other thing? that did not seem to be nessecary in a Hillman Avenger! Then best leave it alone! But its your car:).

without hearing it, we will obviously, all be guessing, but my guess would be a cam follower/cam issue.
oil changed 4k ago, but what oil was used? and what oil has been used in the past?
as regards the level of the oil, you really should keep it at the full mark ,
rather than mid way between full and "too late",

Thanks for reply,
well, the car has a full Audi service history, I'm not sure what oil hasbeen used/is used, but it will be whatever the Audi dealer in Bolton Manchester uses... I guess it would be somesort of “Audi approved” oil for diesel engines.
I suppose I could top-up, I was thinking of actually topping up with someoil additive to make the oil more "sticky" to surfaces, any experience/recommendations?

I personally wouldn't top up with any kind of additives as they might do more harm than good. You could try an oil and filter change as that might help.I personally don't trust the Audi stamp in the service book.
Thanks for replying, well, I myself am not too keen a service at dealers either. Still every time I've had a "semi new car" I keep going there to get those "authorized stamps" but I do think
that the very least they actually do at a service is a 'proper' oil/filter change. Whether they then also perform all those other things that are meant to be done according to the service manual one
can only speculate on. I've had loads of small little nags and faults on the car already which I've fixed myself as the car is just 2 months out of warranty, running the VAG-COM diagnostic tool
actually shows that some of these faults have been there for a loooong time while the car was still under warranty.
Remarkable that none of these faults have been picked up by Audi themselves during any of these past services...
