I've had some continuous problems with my A4, the most annoying ones being losing all the power (usually on the motorway and more often when it's hot.) And if i park facing slightly downhill with less than about 70 miles of fuel left, the car won't start unless i put a couple more litres in.

I'm thinking that the problem is probably the fuel pump.

Am i barking up the right tree and if so, is it worth me trying to change the pump myself or is it a garage job?

I'm not the most mechanically minded person in the world but i don't mind having a go.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

It does sound like the in tank lift pump has failed but the system does require bleeding after fitting and with your lack of mechanical knowledge I am reluctant to assist you in working with fuel and this system.

That's great Crasher, thanks very much for your reply.
I was worried that it may be an "in tank" problem. I've no desire to blow myself or anything else up so i'll leave this one to the professionals i think. At least i know what to expect now.
Is it a big job for a mechanic do you know should i be remortgaging the house ?

Is it pretty straightforward to do but make sure the tank is as low as possible. The worst part is putting your hand into the petrol, at this time of the year your hand goes incredibly cold very quickly so if you are up to your elbow in it, the experience is not pleasant.

Thanks for that Crasher, appreciate it.

Did you fix this problem and which pump if any was it that did the trick, I've exactly the same problem!
Any replies appreciated.
