I ran a Golf 3 estate for some years and found the car top heavy when empty - tended to lean over a lot on tight corners. With a reasonable load in it, the handling was much better but of course dragging the weight around reduced the acceleration.
Having said that, I would never have lowered it because I think it would have hit the bump stops with a load in. The reason I bought it in the first place was to carry stuff - why did you buy an estate? They're not built for screaming around corners at high speed.

i dont want it lowerd so much its on the bump stops, just about 40 mm like the gti saloon then it will be built for screaming around at high speed

Golf 4 Estate rear springs are much stronger than the hatch equivalents.

Am I right in thinking they're progressive rate, softer unladen and getting stiffer as they're compressed? My estate seemed quite "wallowy" with no load in but much tighter when there was some weight in the car.

The springs are progressive but the rear dampers also have rising rate bump stops which assist the springs and have often failed due to age.
