4 days ago I spilled a small amount of coffee on my MMI unit. Over the preceding 2 days the whole unit acted erratically with lights flashing etc. The unit has now come back up and works flawlessly apart from the main select button (large knob), the return button and back forward buttons. These click normally but do not function. After reading a number of threads on forums my guess is that the coffee has caused a short on the main board below the MMI and this needs to be cleaned. Does anyone know of a dealer who offers this service? I have been to Audi Coventry who have told me they will not clean the unit but will only replace for new. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

If you are tech savvy you could do it yourself. However most of the damage has probably been done now as the coffee will have shorted the PCB of the mmi knob (ideally you should turn off all electrics if it has a spill on it). However you could take it out. check with a continuity checker and clean off the board with pure alcohol. Other than that you could try independants as audi will rob you clean for that.

Spilled coffee has been known to bring aircraft down...

Thanks for this. I was hoping someone could recommend a garage/ engineer that would look in to it, clean the board to try to resolve the problem or quote to replace if not. From what I can tell this is quite a common issue. Any ideas?

Could you let me know how you get on Bp77? I asked about a similar thing a while back & didn't get much further after I spilled Sprite over mine.

M

I took the car down to this guy. He got the MMI back up and fully working - it seemed to last a few hours and then reverted back to its fault state - i.e. main knob button not working!! Really frustrating. He is going to try again today to sort it and run a reset on the MMI.

Has anyone else got any thoughts? Thanks.

If you're interested I got a replacement reconditioned MMI unit fitted yesterday by a company called HazzyDayz, you can find them with a web search. It worked out at half the price of a replacement unit fitted by Audi. Can highly recommend these guys, they swapped it in a hour and now works a treat.

Lol....I'm with you on that one.
I had a large travel mug of coffee in my drinks holder ( it was a bit full too / with no lid ) and I went round a corner a little quicker than I should have and bam, coffee everywhere!
In reality, a little coffee spilled over and into the drinks holder area and NOT all over my MMI

No more drinks of that type allowed in my cockpit area either.......too much time / hassle and money to be putting things like that right that can be easily avoided.

Thanks very much for posting BP77, that's good to know. I've seen these guys on the web while looking for after-market bluetooth kit, good to get a personal recommendation.

well I have now managed to do the same thing.

Any idea on how much a new control panel is from Audi?????

Is it worth dismantling it and cleaning it with electrical cleaner? the coffee was pure black with no sugar in it

£600 . Need it fixed fast as its my daily driver. That is one expensive coffee. And it was only a thimble full.

You have been warned.

Tried eBay Josh?

Just another option before spending £600

had a look at these but these units are old. They don't even have the media button.

I could get them, they work for a bit and then fail. It's a £100 risk for a 3 year old car.

As it's my daily driver and I do 25k a year in it, I am going to just choke on my pride and stump up the cash. If i was not so dependent on my car, I would take the punt. But the reality is for use slightly older ones now, having a full time job and 3 kids means yo have little time to ***** around. At least with a new unit, I know it will work first time and I can change it myself on the driveway.

Because the current part is so screwed, I cannot even turn the MMI off, so it is stuck in a permanent reboot every minute or so, so I want to ensure I prevent further damage by leaving it unresolved.

thanks for taking the time though to help...its much appreciated.

update, the panel has come back to life although the back button (where most of the coffee spilled) is pretty useless.

I think I may be lucky as the coffee had no sugar in it

Anyone know of any products I could use to get all the coffee residue off the circuit board.

I will hold off paying for a new panel until I strip the old one down.
