Hi,

I have a 2002 Golf, 1.6 Litre, petorl .

As most of you know, the temperature indicator on the display for the water can go between 0 and 130 degrees with 90 degrees being the temp right in the middle there the temperature indicator should be resting

I have noticed 2 things when driving lately

1 ) It can take 15 minutes for the indicator to get to 90 degrees and it sort of jumps all of a sudden from 0 on the indicator to 90. Is this any harm ??

2 ) I noticed when driving and the water temperature indicator has reached 90 for a while, that sometimes, it will suddenly drop to 30 degrees and then right up to 90 degrees all in a second or so . Just wondering again , is this any harm ??

It never goes above 90 degrees, but just wondering does teh above sound bad expecially point 2

hi mate,

don't know too much about golfs as i am new to them, but from what i remember from the BMW days, what your experiencing could be one of two things :

1) fault coolant temp sensor
2) sticking thermostat

You have a common problem which is the coolant temp sensor. The new one is a superceded unit and is green, from black. They are pretty cheap, and easy to change -4minutes max!!
