View Full Version : Worried about buying an A6 2.0 tdi (injectors)

Been scouring the forums and have seen a few threads relating to VOSA getting involved with the same problem on Passats and others stating that the injectors only fail on 170 bhp engines. Not seen anything very recent and wondered if this problem had gone away.

I'm after an A6 2.0 tdi in the near future and never thought I was worried about high mileage as I'm driving a 1.9tdi Passat at the moment with 212,000 miles on it and still running well. It gets looked after, is never abused and I thought that was the secret to trouble free motoring. These seemingly troublesome injectors are a cause for concern though.

Is it right that only the 170bhp engines tend to be affected? I'd be happy with a 140bhp model. If they should fail are Audi acknowledging the problem and replacing them either free of charge or heavily discounted?

Any definitive answers would be greatly appreciated.

Have to say that this issue is pushing me to consider a BMW 5 series 2.0 tdi. To be completely honest I like both cars equally, just want the least hassle for the next 150,000 miles! If anyone can give me reasons for and against I'd be very gratefull for those also. For the record I'm not bothered about small differences in performance or build quality as I understand the limits of a 2.0 and the build quality will be very good in both but fuel economy is important as is reliability and the potential emergence of expensive failures, hence this thread! The car I'd be looking for would be about 3 years old with somewhere around 50-60k on the clock.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and also for any guidance anyone can offer.

I know it's injectors AGAIN but if someone could please tell me if that's right about only the 170bhp engines being affected I'd appreciate it. That and what Audi's current stance on the matter appears to be?

Please?

Thank you.

only ones ive had go faulty are on 170bhp and audi are doing them
but not to worry you but check to see if oil pump is driven by chain or gear as chains are breaking and are not being sorted by audi

I know this may sound radical, but you could consider a very high mileage, relatively new example, maybe even with a known problem for a bargain price, with a view to changing the engine for a re-engineered one. All the other stuff should be relatively untouched, and the gadgetry would be modern as opposed to 2005 vintage.

Would cost around £4k for a reconditioned engine and installation, with associated cambelt change, tubes and whatnot, but you then have pretty much peace of mind for your forthcoming 200k miles or whatever, and if you take the £4k cost, set it off against the discount purchase price you paid and spread it over the planned period of ownership (5 years?) then you could well get a trouble-free and worry-free ownership for not a lot?

A bit desperate perhaps, but I'm coming to the end of year one of being in that position, albeit not voluntarily(!) and the engine is opening up nicely now, not least after a summer trip to Italy. Maybe worth a thought.:D

Alternatively buy a 2009 onwards model.....it uses the CR VW engine and the injectors are failing only on the PD engines which were fitted to the A6 upto 2009. The facelifted A6 has the CR engine.
I managed to pick up 2009 MY 2.0 tdie S-line Avant a couple of months back with 98000 on the clock and FASH for £15K
