Hi all.
My 3.0tdi Le Mans has a Mitchelin and a Pirelli on the rears and a pair of budgets on the front.
I'm looking af putting a full set on very soon but I'm unsure what to go for.
My instinct is leaning me towards a set of continentals but I'd like to hear what other people have and if anybody has any recommendations. I only do about 4-5k miles a year and this is a mix of all driving types as the car is only really used at weekends so I don't need to get huge miles out if any tyres as any tyres I do buy will be on the car for many years I guess.
The size is 255/35 19.
Thank you
Tony

Falken F452 in exactly the size you have. No complaints and good value too

My last three cars i have always gone for michelin pilot sports and they are great. The wear rate is good and the handling is just perfect. Bit pricey but worth it.

I'm running 245/40 18 (Pirelli p zero) on my 3.0dti Quattro avant, good in wet and dry - bought 4 of them part worn (7mil instead of the 8mil new - no repair holes - cost 300quid delivered).

Had Conti SC2 on for the last few thousand miles & think they've been pretty good, grippy in rain or shine. Better than the Pirelli's I had on it before. Have to say though that I keep hearing great things about the Michelin PS3 & will be giving them a go next time.

My finding has been that certain tyres suit certain cars so the best recommendations will come from people with similar engine and wheel size as your car. On my Volvo S60, now sold, GY F1 GSD3s were the worst tyre I have ever had yet people with other cars rave about them. The best tyres were Michelin PS3s followed by the Primacys, quiet, great wear rate and good grip in all conditions. The high price pays off in the excellent wear rate and the lower rolling resistance.
I have CS3s on the front of my 'new' A6 2.0TDI SE Avant, mainly motorway miles and there's still 5mm left after 14k. Good grip and quiet and no problems with traction. On the back are Dunlop Sport 01s which I would never have chosen but seem to be fine - no complaints.

I have recently fitted a set of Michelin PS3s onto my A6 3.0TDI - 245/40/R18. They are really excellent tyres.
Some might say that I might be biased towards Michelin given that I've track tested their tyres, but I have been on many different brands of tyres, and I would still say that Michelin PS3 gives you one of the best balance - grip/wear/braking/comfort.
I would recommend you to get a set.
You can either get a set via Camskill and get it fitted at a garage that you are familiar. I've got mine from F1 Autocentres - because the cost of tyres + fitting + discount is cheaper than camskill. You can purchase via quidco to get cash back.

Hi All,
Has anyone tried the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2 tyres yet? I've read a few reports where they have received good reviews, but it would nice to hear from someone first hand, as we all know they could be an expensive error!!
Cheers

I had 2 Goodyear Eagle F1s on the front of my A6 a couple of months after I got the car. I bought them because I was told Goodyears were good and wore well.
After 10k of motorway driving they were down to 2mm each. By this time the two rears were needing changed too.
I bought 4 Michelin Pilot Sports on special offer from KwikFit for £1k. 13k miles on and they arent showing any significant signs of wear.
So I would definitely reccommend Michelin Pilot Sports and in my case, not reccommend Eagle F1s.

Yup, my experience too and awful grip and traction in the wet and dry on what was not a high performance car in any terms. I can't understand their reputation...
Chappers.

I know that we use Goodyear tyres at work a lot and my experience of them is not very good at all - they all seem to have poor grip and mediocre life-spans (admittedly I do work for one of the emergency services so they get a fairly hard life).
I look forward to seeing how this thread pans out so I know what to look out for when it comes round to changing the tyres on my own car!

So it just aint me then that has had problems with them then.
I will definitely be going Michelin again the next time they are due a change. Totally worth the extra £££'s.

This is really making for interesting reading. I just want to make sure that it was the "Asymmetric 2" tyre that you had and not the original, as I understand the "2" was/is supposed to be a significant improvement over the original asymmetric.
humphrey999

No, these weren't even the asymmetric, the GSD3s F1.

But that was enough for me, Michelin and Contis all the way now... Pirelli SottoZeros were excellent for winters though much as I hated P6000s.

I am in the market for some tyres to and this makes for some good reading. I have been given a good quote for a pair of Avon zzr5. Has anyone had any experience with these?
I am also wondering whether to get some winter tyres and wait for the summer tyres or get some summers and a pair of snow socks.

>>I am also wondering whether to get some winter tyres and wait for the summer tyres or get some summers and a pair of snow sock
IMHO it depends on whether you mind/want to spend money upfront on having two sets of tyres... the only incremental cost of having winter tyres is the additional set of wheels, which if you buy them on ebay will probably not depreciate significantly. Winter tyres don't wear more quickly than summers (in my experience) and while you're using the winters you're not wearing the summers out. I got a set of 5x 5-spoke 17 audi alloys for £160 off fleabay and sold two of them on separately for £120. I reckon I can use my full size spare as one of my winter set. The incremental cost of the wheels was therefore negligible.
Personally I don't think that money spent on premium tyres is ever wasted.

Yup.. the additional spent on premium tyres are never wasted because of the safety is provides.
Bear in mind that Michelin have different pilot sports.
There is the PS2, PS3 and PSS.
The PS2 is an old tyre which is replaced by the PSS. The PSS is a really outstanding all round tyre, only problem is the cost.
The PS3 is an excellent tyre which is what I've fitted on my car right now.
Cheers.

unfortunately they don't make the right fitment for the 17" wheel :(

awww.... :(
Well, there's the primacy HP. Wears very well, good for fuel efficiency BUT doesn't have as good a grip as the PS3.

Yeah, I know, in fact I had the Primacys before the PS3s on my last car but TBH I can't fault the CS3s and much as I want to hate them I can't think of a reason to rip the Dunlops off early either! I'm going for the ContiWinterContact TS830s when it starts to get cold too, I have them reserved! Interestingly the Michelin winters don't get too good a write up ever...

whats the rim protector like. I found a lot of tyres offer no rim protection on 19 wheels. are the michelins any good in this regard.

That seems like a reasonable test with some interesting results, before I jumped either way I would try to find a number of tests and look for trends but then that takes lots of time... Most of the tests also cited on that page show widely varying results, that's the problem.

Yes exactly. If you find some more info I'd be interested to read it. I'm thinking to buy new summer tyres when I swop to my winter tyres 1st December.

Well, I got the ZZ5's and will report as and when. Initial impressions good. If anyone lives in the North East, I can fully recommend North East Tyres, they price matched Camskills so I am a very happy man.

Hi Piotrek, they were the same ones that Humphrey999 posted with the V shape tread. I will never be buying Goodyear again and definitely going Michelin after my current set need replaced.

Hi man le-mans, yes they are the PS2's. I think KwikFit were trying to get rid of them so thats why they were on offer to make room for the new Pilot Super Sport tyre that was released a short time later after I bought them.
Even though they are considered an 'older' tyre, they still perform very well on different types of road and road noise is significantly reduced after my spell with Goodyears.
I will be definitely be buying Michelin again and more than likely buy the Super Sport tyres.

Thanks A6 chris
I think i will invest in them when i next need some tyres. Im not that imprested with the pirelli that is on there at the moment as thats what the car come with and with only 8k on the clock they only have 4mm left

I like the Supersport alot! However they are pretty expensive and harsher.
For myself on the A6 - I think the PS3 are good enough.

When the time comes I'll be doing more research into the PS3s and SS but it'll either be one of the two.
