The car tax on my new car is more expensive than I thought it would be. Mainly due to Autotrader giving low figures for everything I was looking at. In reality the car is in Band H when everything looked like it all 2.0TDi's (140) were Band G

So question is - why the difference what engine change happened to go from 169 to 159 on the 2.0TDI from Sept2006?

Some sort of engine management mod was made to reduce the C02. C02 bands really seem to be driving development recently, lower band cars are selling better. Nothing you can do to change your tax bracket though sadly. It pays to fully investigate the difference before purchase. Not too much of a problem between G/H but it does get very expensive in the higher bands. There can be a +/- £200 difference depending on registration date.

Youre lucky, because as Isaac says, the higher bands can suffer badly from 1 or 2 Co2 differences.

See this on Tubbsy's car - http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?124324-Car-tax-band-issue-its-wrong

His car may cost him £445 to tax per year because his car is 1 Co2 into the L Band. The K band for example is £260/year so theres a massive difference there

Read his thread as he is contacting dvla as his car (from reading) is in the wrong band and is Co2'd wrong according to the date when it was registered.

My 2.0TDi is in Band G as I paid £165 for this year.

Whats your cars engine code? There may be minor revisions in the engine deisgn etc which allowed it to be tested with lower emissions. Knowing the engine code will allow is to look at the right diagrams in the workshop manual. Don;t be surprised if the only difference is the mapping to get the cars under the threshold!

My car is an 08 (Pre Facelift) with the 2.0TDi 140hp BRE engine (Pump Duse, not common rail)

As chris said I've taken a real knock on this co2 thing. I'm still waiting for Audi to come back to me as the tech guys at the dealer cannot answer the questions and need to check with Audi UK. I'm hoping it is wrong as it's another £200 a year I wasn't planning on.

If you feel the figures are wrong, check with Audi. I can't hurt too.......

It was actually your post which I read with interest and thought yeh, similar issue.

Normally, every other car I have owned you look up the model and engine size and there it is, one co2 amount. These 2.0TDi A6's the co2 amount various all over the internet. Autotrader, What Car, Honest John etc... then theres the 2.0 TDI above picture which shows a co2 drop even before the TDIe was brought out.

Very confusing indeed...

This has got me wondering - as it did when I got a new tax disc back in October 2010 for the first time for my (second hand) car.

First registered on 31st May 2008, it's a 2.0 tdi, listed on the V5 with CO2 rating of 178 - i.e. higher than even band H above. As I recall it cost £200.

Not a lot of money, but I'd rather pay less if less is the right amount. Engine No is BRE182635, variant ABREF1

If I remember rightly it depends on what options you have fitted to the car as well. So the quoted figure in the press is for the standard car but factory options can add to the co2 rating. I have no more detail than that but I do remember reading on my company car list that the official CO2 score is calculated when all of the requested options are taken into account.
