Retrofit roof rails on Sportback

Has anyone done this?
I see retrofit chrome rail kits advertsied on ebay and the like but is this a DIY job or something I should steer well clear of?
The rails look good and are practical too but I would appreciate your thoughts of wisdom on this!

I am an engineer so it shouldn't present too much of a problem, but I'd still like to hear from someone who has fitted them....better to understand than make a mistake!
