Passat 2.3 AZX 2001 rattling timing chain

I have just looked at the above and the timing chain/ VVT area is rattling under light throttel

is this likely to be a chain issue or a VVT issue ? And what are they like to replace the chain.

Surely engine out job?

It is a bad enough job when the engine is in a Golf 4 but in a Passat it becomes a very big and expensive job. The only trouble is, if they leave it the chains will eventually jump and bend a valve or four which makes it a massive job and will probably write the car off.
